Cantilever Bosses on Aluminium Frane

  • Morning,

Does anyone know if it's possible to get canti bosses brazed onto an ali frame? Contacted a few places in London but was told they couldn't do it to an Ali frame. Any suggestions welcome!

    Thanks

  • Not a viable option.
Try using a v-brake plate, like this one from Billys.

  • who did you ask about brazing them on out of interest?

  • I don't know enough about this sort of thing, but is the logic behind not being able to *weld *them because the tubing is too thin on the stays, or is it to do with the heat? I thought brasing was a steel only thing.

Also could you not glue bosses on, like they do with carbon fibre? I remember going round the lotus factory when I was younger and the chaises for the elise was glued, rather than welded.

  • JV, I contacted Bikefix, they told me they couldn't do ali. Awaiting a reply from Oak Cycles too.

Hugo, ali & steel just don't seem to bond very well. Read somewhere that they can be joint but it isn't particularly straightforwards. you could potentially bond it using an industrial adhesive but that involve a lot of faffage, etching of the ali etc to remove the oxide layer. You're right about the Elise chasis being glued, fancy stuff

Just out of curiosity, how do/did they put bosses on ali frames back in the day?

    Cheers

  • I know alu + steel is effectively a no-no, but I would have thought you could weld alu bosses to an alu frame? Have you tried giving Roake or Roberts a call as I'm pretty sure they both do alu frames.

Or maybe the fixings are alu and then the actual bosses are screwed in?

  • Good idea, I'll give Roberts a ring as they're only Croydon. They must have something.

    Cheers
