They're definitely not the same type.
Mine is definitely 44m in diameter inside.Should I just buy a semi-integral 44mm headset?
Anyone knows where can I buy Chris King InSet 44mm?Perhaps other brands, please?
Can't wait two weeks for Cane Creek from China. -

More Planet X fun.

http://oi51.tinypic.com/2dtc11d.jpgFrame utilizes a traditional 11/4 head set
PLEASE NOTE SMALL SIZE FRAMES REQUIRE A FSA Orbit ZS-3 Internal Headset NOT Chris King Devolution.
The thing is, mine isn't small, it's large. Planet X's internal headset it too small anyway - I've got one at home.
They don't even have it stock (for 50mm OD/44mm ID) -

Hi EEI,
Cane Creek's guide is your friend > http://www.canecreek.com/manuals/Headset_Identification_and_SpecificationGuide.pdf
one thing to watch is protrusion distance of base of crown race below cups and/or bearings. some of the FSA 'internal' or ZS headsets leave as much as 1.2mm of unsightly gap between forks and bottom of head tube.

OK, so I've managed to solve my headache - Planet X website was wrong.
Fitted Ritchey zero stack semi-integrated and it's all dandy.
In the mean time fitted Crank Brothers low profile one with a hammer :-)I've only came back to this thread, because others have apparently some headset problems with Pioneer.
Here's also a good general instruction of fitting any threadless (it's all about preloading the bearings and not getting anything too tight):

I've used the Chris King Devolution Headset on the Van Nicholas Pioneer Bicycle and it does not turn very well on the Road. There is something seriously wrong with it, and I am not technical enough to figure it out. I just know, I do cycle a lot, that the bicycle does not turn as it should. It's really disappointing. I will contact Van Nicholas itself, I cannot see any other option available to me.

FatOldSun, was your headtube like mine or different, as you fitted the Devolution headset?

Funny that... How come you have a completely different model to mine?
Did you buy it from Planet X or directly from Van Nicholas.Yours it's an older model with a headtube sized for a 1 1/4" MTB fork (I mean fork itself is 1 1/8" and that's why needs the Devolution headset)..
Have you tried loosening the bolt a bit?

Have your frames had proper prep i.e. reaming and facing?
Did you install properly with a proper press (pressing both cups simultaneously with the correct spacer)?
When you turn the handle bars does it feel crunchy or smooth? It's tough discussing this online without looking and feeling.

Van Nicholas is prepped in the factory (chased, reamed and faced).
Planet X, again...
I've bought that Van Nicholas Pioneer frame from them.
First bought a wrong fork, as suggested on their website.
Now I think I might heave problem with the headset.
Their website says that Pioneer accepts "traditional 1 1/4 headset" and suggests Chris King Devolution one.
I bought it, because it was cheeper than anywhere else.
I've just measured the head tube and it seems to be 44mm.
On both - Planet X and Van Nicholas (and other) - websites there appear two different photos. One des look like it can be 11/4, but the other (newer one) is for sure 44mm semi-integrated headset.
This is mine - newer type without a weld under the downtube:

This is the one which looks more like 1 1/4"

So, why the lies? I'm fed up with sending things back to them.
