I use Fusion Gyms- they are a group mainly centred in Sotuh London, I used to use Brockwell Lido all teh time, but they have just opened the newly refurbished gyms in Camberwell and East Dulwich, of the two I am going to the East Dulwich one mainly at the moment.
£50 a month gets you access to all the gyms in the group, and the Lido has a sauna type thing I think.

Where do you live?
There are some very good council facilities. I know that Camden has some (Swiss Cottage I think), also the Islington Highbury gym, is fairly good - not as slick as others, but it has what you need (inc. a pool) and plenty of classes.
Also there are probably some deals to be had if you look around. Partnerships with credit cards, I remember a few years ago one health insurance co, gave Virgin membership at a discount, and if you went over a certain number of times a month also reduced your insurance premiums.

Gym, what's a gym?

If you're in the east, the local tower hamlets gyms are ok. I usually go to either mile end or york hall which costs me about £25 a month but I am a student I think it's usually £45ish.

YMCA by tottenham court road is about £40 a month - swimming pool, steam room, sauna, big CV studio etc etc - looks like it's been recently done out because everything is pristine.
Worth a look if you want something central.

If you want to get a slightly 'cheaper' Virgin Active membership of around £60 quid a month and not tied into any of their contracts you need to find a friend or family member who works for Virgin and has a tribe card.

Thanks Dammit, just had a look, all seems to be very pool focussed though and couldn't see a steam/sauna anywhere. They also don't have membership costs on their site (v. annoying) so have sent them an email.
hugo7 - I'm in between Camberwell and Peckham.
Shoosh - sounds great in principle if only I knew someone who works for Virgin?!

I'm in exactly the same position - thus the posting of this thread http://www.lfgss.com/thread68964.html
There must be someone on here who does, or at least has a friend of a friend who can do us a favour. I understand it isn't like a great sin, because the membership sales person of my old VirginActive actually put me on his tribe card in order to get a sale that month.

I used to go to the miami health club on old kent road when i lived around there. it was ok, good equipment, quite cheap, never too busy with a small sauna. It's owned and run by Dan and his family who are nice and friendly.
Does anyone have a recommendations for a gym around haggerston/hoxton way? i went to kings gym on kingsland road for a while but it was too much like a prison gym for me

Possibly, if they are all funded by southwark council.

I go to the Mile End Gym, and it's 27.89 or something a month for gym access only. So you don't need to be a student, and it's not bad at all.

I nearest one I could think of is the Britannia Leisure Centre in Hoxton. Here is the link

Thanks fella, just checked it out but £45/month for health insurance with a large excess (£500) is steep for 'up to' 50% off Virgin membership. Need to think about it, I guess on the one hand I get health insurance but the cover doesn't offer me a great deal more than what national health would do if I fell ill/fell off a ladder, anyway...

^thats pretty close to me, will check it out cheers
A gym that doesn't cost the earth to join and pay monthly fees for. One that has decent facilities, ideally including a steam/sauna room. Any ideas? I had a look at Virgin Active but they were pretty expensive.
