I had my bike nicked yesterday and reported it- police's advice to me was to check brick lane and gumtree, and if I find it, call them and they'll deal with it- try my local police station first and if I can't get hold of an officer straight away, call 999.
Brick Lane was an extremely depressing experience- loads of awful people selling stolen stuff.
I don't hold out much hope of mine turning up :(
