Yes, no adaptation needed, you're right, an ahead stem that's either made for 1" steerer (they do exist) or a 1 1/8" stem with a shim.
You'll also need a 1" carbon steerer bung to preload the headset as a star flanged nut would damage the steerer.
It's advisable to run one spacer above the stem on a carbon steerer as clamping the steerer too near the top can damage it.
