Thanks for the responses so far, unfortunately don't have a first born so that management option is out of the window ;)
It is a steel frame, had a good look with a halogen lamp but failed to find any cracks or damage around there, also checked all the other joints in the frame... Any other ideas before I replace the freewheel?
Also just for serving my curiosity does anyone know what makes/can make this sound? Always keen to learn as much as poss about my bike.

These things can be a nightmare to solve. Almost any niose on the drivechain can feel like its the BB when riding. I had a periodic clunk on the commuter a couple weeks back. That turned out to be a loosened non-drivesid crankarm (external bearing set-up).
Start removing, greasing and reinstalling bits. Definitly pull the cassette off and check the free hub for wear, and laterall movement.

loose chainring stack bolts
saddle/post
poorly threaded pedal
/speaking from experience :(

Checked every suggestion aside from the freewheel, which I don't have the tool for atm.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, I guess we've eliminated it down to one thing... case closed - for now. Will be back if I still can't sort it once I have the tools!

This sounds a lot like my weird rhythmic click/clunk:
- only happens when pedalling
- random and intermittent
- regreased seat post, no effect, plus it happens while in or out of saddle
- brand new freewheel installed last month
- chain is straight and not over extended
- happens regardless of which side I pedal with, so not the cranks pedals or cleats
I'm now thinking bb is all that's left to check, but I don't have a crank puller.

Haha, why don't we meet up, I'll sort your BB if you sort my freewheel!!

Hi, My bike has developed a creak, only when I ride and it appears to be coming from the back. Can anyone offer any advice?....... could it be a bearing? I've had the bike serviced and the bottom bracket looked at and it is still there.

Could be:
Bottom bracket lockrings
Crank bolts
Chainring bolts
Hub locknuts
Pedal axle seals
Wheelnuts
Saddle
Seatpost clamp
Saddle clampBasically just check everything that might come loose and tighten it.

90% of that sort of creak seem to end up being the seatpost from what i've seen...take it out, clean it, bit of grease, put it back , tighten up...voila...

It always seems to be chainring bolts when I get a creak! BlueQuinn's advice is sound

Chainring bolts everytime for me

Forgive the unknown, chainring bolts? where are they? I used to just take the fixy to a bike shop and get everydone by them, but would rather try and do it myself, is it possible? Thank you

Its certainly not the seat post, the creak is coming from the back wheel somewhere, or pedal.....I'll try the chianring bolt when I work out where/how to do it.

The chain ring is attached to your crank so the big circle your chain goes round that is attached to your pedals. There should be 5 round bolts on this which you can tighten yourself easily with a allen key and a screwdriver - good luck!

The chainring bolts are the red bolts on the chainring in this picture, which connect the ring to the crank arms.
You will need an allen key and a flat head screw driver of a chainring tool to tighten them.

I could fucken hug and kiss all of you, been creaking for a while, thought I'd tried everything, different saddles, different pedals, I was worried crank tapers must have stretched...finally I have a silent bike thank you!

My bike was creaking. Then I discovered I'd ruined my thomson stem face plate from overtightening, and deformed my nitto road bend. fuckity.

I have a 'clunk' noise on every second crank rotation (i.e. every second time my left foot is forward). (Fixed, all 1/8", <1yr old, clunks only when pedalling hard).
I took the rear wheel out and gave the chain a wipe/inspection/lube, seemed fine, put it back together and the clunk is still there. It really seems like it's the chain because I marked one link and it definitely corresponds with two crank turns, but surely when I removed/replaced the wheel the chain would've ended up in a different position? In hindsight I should've made sure of this but I'd be amazed if I happened to put it back the same. -

A silent bike for me too. I just screwed the charing bolts tighter.

take your pedals off, lube em up and stick em back on.
Steel frame? Check BB area for cracks, usually chainstay or seat tube junction.
