so, did 70ish miles unpadded (lond-camb) with no ill effects, then did 40ish padded (Classic) with... no ill effects. hmm.
observations:
- Ultrabalm from lush seems nice and benign (I have quite sensitive skin generally) and provides some lubrication but it is quite thick/waxy, so washing it out could be a pain.
- padded was actually slightly less comfortable in that the pad is basically too absorbent. um, without wanting to going into too much detail.

^are you factoring in stops? 40 miles relatively unbroken would be tougher on your rear than 70 miles with a 15 min break every 10 miles*.
*don't actually know that was the case, but it was a Skully ride.

hah! I forgot to mention that - the longer ride had much less stopping and was generally at or above my comfort speed, whereas the London Classic I did very slowly, with ice-cream and milkshake breaks etc. and plenty of walking up hills. also, the Classic I spent a fair amount of time out of the saddle, on the cobbles and failing to attack hills.

Maybe a silly question but can you use chamois cream on CoolMax type pads?
I have a pair of Netti Chill Nix, which feel great on, but the pad feels like sandpaper at about 20 miles.

Thats right... silver ions.

Any recommendations for cheap padded short liners? I am skint but need a few pairs for touring. Am contemplating Altura but bit worried the pad will be too thin. Will be doing 60-80 miles a day and I do like properly dense liners (Sugoi are my favourites, I'll get more of them if I can't find any cheaper good ones but thought I'd ask for recommendations first).

I find the endura ones have a decent pad on them, mine are a couple of years old now and are still going strong -I've recently reverted back to them for commuting as well, as they are much cooler.
nice and cheap too http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=9375&utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=Google-Products-UK -

Ooh, perfect. Cheers!
also if anyone's an extra small JE James have some Nike shorts with 70-80% off: http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/cycle-clothing-clearance.html
I have some Nike bib tights and they are brilliant; I would be all over the £7 shorts if I could fit into an extra small.

Can anyone suggest a good pair of lycra shorts. This isn't for daily commutes, obviously I wouldn't drag the fixie hipster image down to that of the lycra commuter, especially as you've all worked so hard to keep it exclusive.
I really like the Rapha ones here: (http://www.rapha.cc/rapha-condor-sharp-bib-shorts)
But cannot warrant spending £155+ on them.
Looking for something short and comfortable for long rides.

You really need to try them on to work out what works for you. It's not a one size fits all situation.
Also, commuting in Lycra is a good thing, don't write it off. -

Ribble do the assos ones for 100 quid atm. I dont own a pair (yet) but everyone raves on about how good they are.

wiggle's dhb stuff is great if you're on a budget.
i used a pair of their 3/4s for a 220mile overnighter a few months ago and was comfortable throughout. they aren't nearly as nice as the rapha stuff i usually use for distances but i didnt have cash that month to spend on a new pair of 3/4s so i took a chance. no regrets and i'll likely use them again this autumn. -
