I'm not sure about starting out clipless but ending up clipless is a great idea, so if you don't mind falling off then perhaps starting out clipless is a good idea.

Checking the OP for polo bike set up as well as safety is a good idea. You'll need the brake on the other side from your mallet hand, and low gearing would be a good idea too if you can.
