  • There's always a few on eBay.

    There's none on ebay :(

There will be now that the sale has ended - anybody selling second hand doesn't really want to be competing with the sale price.

I hope so. I've set up a saved search and one has gone on there today but not in the right size unfortunately.

I'm calling dibs on the first large one! :)

  • Anyone up for swapping a medium pompino F+F (light blue) in mint condition for a small same colour and condition?

  • On-one are making a frame a bit like this called the Machinato, here is a picture of some prototypes from their blog (the red and blue-purple frames):

You can see it more side-on on this photo from Dalby Forest, look at the large size and compare Machinato with Pompetamine and Pompino below.

A cheap steel On-one frame with track sensibilities that takes normal caliper brakes is very tempting; decals and colours not to my taste though.

I think the red one looks pretty decent. Not sure how much they have slope on the top tube (or do they have at all, hard to tell from the pictures), as that might be an issue with some ppl.

  • Still looking to swap a medium f+f in blue in mint condition for a small in same colour and condition...anyone????

  • Small blue frame's still cheap on their site. Maybe you could put the medium on ebay?

  • salsa bar tape update...now we´re talking...rides so smooth...i´ll never give those nitto rando bars away again :)

  • Starting to get stuff in for my Pompetamine build. Hope Pro 2 disc hubs are on the way, as are Kona P2s. Not my first choice but I think they'll work. Still hoping the frame's going to go back on sale before I need it but unlikley I think.

  • Nice choice, Pro 2 EVO?

Hope Pro 2 disc hubs are on the way ....

  • Nah, just the standard pro 2s. Couldn't justify the extra costs when the minimal upgrades they made won't make all that much difference to the setup I'm running. Also I really don't like the new "evo" laser etched logo they're using now. Prefer the classic logo

  • Romy Pompy - my repainted One One Pompi

  • Here is mine

I either ride it to work and back, 2 * 20km or biking trips in the countryside 40km - 95km trips to keep fit, its running a 42/16 for the moment.

All details can been seen on my blog

  • Thinking of putting V brakes on my pompino, as it seems that they may be simpler and more effective than cantis. I seem to remember a v brake thread but can't find it (search does not allow the term 'v'). What are people's experiences/recommendations? Are there any brands that are particularly good? I guess shimano should be good as they came up with the design. I'll need to get new levers as well, but it seems the choice of those is fairly limited anyway.

  • Are there any brands that are particularly good?

They're all much of a muchness - how complicated can a beam with a hole in one end be? :-)
I have tried shorter pads than the usual MTB style, and liked them. More pressure x less area seems to give more bite.

Tektro Mini-V seem like a good idea, no need to change your levers and more tyre clearance than a Pompino has space to exploit.

  • ^they do seem like a good idea, but I think I remember hearing they had a down-side (something to do with reduced mechanical advantage?) What about the shimano 'parallel-push'? I find with my cantis that they can curve downwards and press against the bottom edge of the brake surface after a while, and that sometimes they can brush against the tyre - the parallel -push are supposed to prevent that.

  • What about the shimano 'parallel-push'?

They stopped making them 2 generations ago.

Regarding "mechanical advantage", there is only so much to go around. The reach on your levers and hand force constrains the input, and the only way to get more force out at the brake blocks is to reduce their travel, meaning less clearance between the pads and the rim when the brake is off. You can cheat a bit by engineering the geometry or linkage to provide a falling rate (that's what the cantilever straddle cable does, for example), but at the cost of finicky set up and brake modulation which changes as the pads wear. V-brakes were designed to get around this by using a simple, long beam which doesn't move through a very large angle, hence their other name, 'Linear Pull'

Compared with true MTB V-brakes with their matching levers, Mini-V brakes with road levers have a shorter cable travel and higher cable tension, which can lead to more backlash in the system as the cable is a spring, but mechanical advantage is essentially unchanged.

  • Evil Rabbit up there ^^^^^^ has Mini-Vs, so you could always ask him for feedback.

    This be true. I do.

Mine are OK, nothing more. Not had the bike long and not looked into why things feel a bit too wooly for my liking. Could be the cable and levers, rather than the calipers. Am looking to upgrade them, but as much aesthetics, as for better braking. Which after a few recommendations will probably MTRs.

  • I run full V-brakes (Avid Single Digit 5's) with Tektro RL520 drop levers on my pomp. Work well stopping my manly mass.

  • Here is my pompetamine

Really nice ride and geometry is fine with a p2 fork. I spent ages deciding on tyres and ended up with Schwalbe Hurricane 42's. The rear clearance is close but not too close

So hard to take a decent picture of the gap. You might be able to get a mudguard in there but it would be tight. 47's would be ok, you might even be able to squeeze in some big apples. My rims are mavic a119 touring rims.

  • picked up this frame and fork from ebay for 51quid. it was either this or a steam roller, no brainer at this price.

  • There's none on ebay :(

    There will be

  • Pomp with the front and rear rack looks dope!

  • It is awesome. I was eying it up as I cycled passed him yesterday. Not sure I can put one on my polo pomp.
