  • Spenceey - put your route into gpsies.com
save it then export it to a .tcx file and to your garmin (if you have the plugin)
alternatively copy that tcx file to your garmin\courses folder
on your garmin, goto training, courses - choose the course and select 'do course'
you'll then have a nice pink line to follow all the way to Dunwich.

This is what I did last year and it worked a treat.

EDIT: What he said ^ damn you TIM!

Thanks Clefty your a star. Just a side note though, would this work if I don't have any maps on the 705?

Clefty a star!? My balls! I even provided you with a ready made Dunwich Dynamo 2011 route!! :-P

If you put in a course, it will guide you along it but won't show that you're on a road unless you have the map. It should be pretty straight forward though as it only gets confusing in a big place and once you're out of london, there aren't any.

  • Ha ha sorry Soul I read hers first. Although to be fair you've done all the work for me mate!!

Yeah how would I see the route which I'm on though? Would it just all be blank with lines throughout as I haven't got maps?

    No worries....

Without the maps, you'd just get an orange background and the pink like which is your route. It would still beep every time you have to make a turn and show you which direction and as long as you keep it zoomed to around the 80-150m mark, it wouldn't be an issue.

It is, however, worth picking up the maps as if you get lost, they are great for finding the nearest pub / cashpoint / petrol station etc etc.

  • just finding the OSM download page for you, hang on..

    edit:

    http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download

several links on here, will let you create your own gmapsupp.img, then you can just dump that file into you garmin root directory

  • Ah right, so routes and maps are different to each other.

Is there anywhere I can get the maps like OSM for nothing? The garmin maps are a little pricey.

  • So just so I'm clear Clefty and Soul.

I can put in the maps say whole of GB from OSM

Then upload the DD route and this will overlay the OSM maps?

  • Yup. Simple

  • Yep
Also I found my original post with the better link for routable maps in
    https://www.lfgss.com/thread25226-2.html#post1389301

  • ha I also just noticed that you posted just below it spenceey!

  • Ha finally taken the plunge 1 year later!

Thanks for the help guys. It should be with me on Wednesday. With any luck I'll have it up and running Wednesday night. The thought of getting lost on the DD doesn't worry me quite so much now!

Also on a side question, once you've done the route, DD for example can I then upload it to Garmin connect as per usual? So I can show off my embarrassing time and the fact I got lost even though I had gps!

  • yep, i uploaded mine from last year - complete with embarrasing time, even tho i didn't get lost..

  • Ah ok, so even though you aren't using the official garmin maps you can still use garmin connect to store all your routes and/or goals?

  • Short answer yes

  • With regard to the 705 or Etrex for routing/tracks.
With an Etrex you can point to somewhere on the map on the etrex and get it to make a route for you there and then "on the road" so to speak.
You do not need anything else to create a route.

  • i have to offer a severe warning to anyone using or thinking of buying a 705. I was heading along Euston Rd to the start of the London>Oxford ride when I managed, with a very light touch, to knock the unit off it's mounting (crappy plastic thing it is) and before I could get off my bike and pick it up two cars had driven over it and it was completely destroyed. As far as i know the unit was fully clicked-in to the mounting, so just be aware and maybe improvise some extra security before you set out... like gaffer tape the f**king thing. Luckily my 4gb micro SD card survived the crushing and the unit itself was covered by my home contents insurance...

  • That's worrying! I'll make sure mine is attached fully.

  • I've heard several reports of problems with the mounting bracket, mine has thankfully been ok.
They've developed a new mount for the 800 series which I hear from several owners is much much better.

  • Has anyone looked into or found a solution for recharging a GPS when away from mains power and without a hub dynamo?

Most of the chat on CTC seems to be about hub dynamo

this any use? i imagine its compatible with other brands ( if you cut off the Nokia plug and soldered on the relevant one for your phone...?)

these are good too...only £17.99....way cheaper ( and more waterproof) than the Dahon ones....fits a Nokia N8 as well..

    Dahon one...

  • ...and can anyone help with my Nokia N8?
ive found some routes id like to ride, but the files are either MMO or GXP ( from memory...) apperently incompatible with N8's.....any idea if i can convert them to work?...ta

  • This may help
Route Converter needs bleepty Java to work. I used GPS Babel from
    http://www.gpsbabel.org/downloaded.html

to convert Garmin XT (.gpx) to Nokia landmark Exchange (.lmx) for ovi maps 3.03. Open the saved file in file manager on your Nokia and select save all. Worked very well!

I used a USB battery backup for Dunwich last year which worked very well, recommended by Scott. it takes 4 regular batteries, plugs into the mini usb on the garmin and although doesn't charge the Garmin, lengthens the battery time.
I'll have a look and see if I can find the details...

  • You shouldn't really need a battery for the DD though should you? The battery life is about 15 hours. I hope to be home in bed by then!

  • I nearly cried last night trying to figure out how to download and read open source maps for an Edge 605.

    Tried here:

    http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

And it sent me some files that just didn't want to appear/overlay in the software (on my PC, not the device itself as I've lent it to my riding buddy)

Surely it can't be that complicated. Might just bite the bullet and buy the map packs...

Any other open source sites for detailed maps of France and Spain, 605 compatible, that are easier to figure out?

  • What software are you using on your PC?
I've only used Roadtrip on the MAC and it's always worked well with that..
