...and the fact that you havent tried any of the options yet leads you to conclude that some of them are 'fads'. I don't think spending £300 - £500 upwards on a piece of kit you use at least 3 times a week and 'looove' is too much to ask. How much do road racers spend on their bikes? How many times a week do you play these days T? Havent seen you for awhile.

I'd be wary of this fad for turboshort stays - at least in edinburgh. We're playing on a court with a little bit of a looser surface up here and wouldn't want to be moving the weight further back; getting rid of front wheel grip. Washouts are no fun.

But you'll still have the same problem as you do when you flip your wheel around... i.e. Brakes out of alignment, chain length issues blah, balh... Strikes me as a backward step...

I think I'll do as much testing out other people's bikes at the Open.
I don't like the feel of MTBs for polo, not my style.

Joe is right, had to move pads whenever I moved the wheel which was a pain. And once you put this freewheel on, you're never getting it off. Unless Hassan has an hour to spare.

Yeah I probably wouldn't set the back brake up for the commute.
The highest gear I could get on the flip flop was with a 15t fixed sproket and I really didn't like going from freewheel to fix.
I see it as a slight step forward because I'm old and weak and could do with loosing the extra weight (on the bike I mean. Maybe should just loose body weight). -

7 speed hub, 48h front wheel, pomp = fricking heavy. Coupled with my age and dare I say gender means I'm slower than most. I'd like to be a bit faster, so I've gone clipless and now thinking about having a lighter bike.

The hub gear really shouldn't be slowing you down if you change down your gear for polo.
And if you are going to use a 3spd casette, why not use a derailleur?

Because I have a track frame and they're not fashionable, I mean, would surely take a beating in polo?
My bike is considerably heavier than other medium pomps, so the extra weight must surely make a difference? I figured the difference between a 1 and 3 speed sproket wouldn't be that much, if I leave the rear brake open on the commute, then it's a fair compromise.
I guess i should just see how I go with being clipless and take it from there.

I don't think the weigh saved is worth the added annoyance of wheel movement etc, unless you combined it with a double up front (and bash guard obviously) so the wheel didn't move much, but I don't think you'd be saving that much weight.
How about having a competition wheel set with a single free wheel and less spokes (but covers), but keep your hub gear for throwins? Assuming you have your direct drive gear (which is the middle gear right?) as you polo gear, you can have the same gear on your competition wheelset...

Direct drive polo gear = 3 gears below are wasted IMO
Can get a d hanger for trackends, dmr make one i think. Then you could bodge a derailleur protector.
Or just put your saddle up higher, pedal down and stop being a baby!

Not whinging, just looking to improve innit. I'm on direct drive now I haz cleats so will htfu and see how I go. Just thought lighter has to be better.

How high is the B/B?
I like the idea of an old mountain bike, but am put off by the huge seatpost required for a 6'2" person, and suspect the b/b would be lower than what I have already.
