Old bike back to life after 20 years!

  • I’ve got a bike that was used only for a few months and after was in storage for the last 20 years! The bike does not look rusted. Though, I am planning to replace the tyres, inner tubes, brake cables and pads for safety.
Shall I also change the chain or a good cleaning will do the job?
What other parts should I consider to replace or service before I use the bike?

  • My bike was in storage for about that, I changed the tyres and snapped the chain so changed that too. Still riding 30 year old brake blocks though :)

  • you guys must be really old...

    Dinosaur cyclists :-)!

  • erm, tighten everything... who knows how fastidious the last owner was..

do you know the reason the bike was stored? thats an important one

Plus you get a process called stress relaxation of the bolts over time, where they slowly lengthen with long term constant stress, and need to be tightened after being dormant for ages.

  • ^^^^ a metallurgist right there.

Check everything out of course anyway, would YOU ride a bike that someone else built, a long long time ago, and then left for 2 decades?

  • Rust, especially if it was left somewhere damp like an unheated garage.
