Wrongcog has it absolutely right.
Just out of curiosity, what in the OP's own words did the trespasser/ potential theif's colour add to the setting of the "scene"? Aside from the fact that he was black, so you know he was up to no good. Surely stranger halfway through your window tells us all we needed to know?

Erm, I've been offline. For the record, despite the fact it's a word often used jokingly on this forum, I was being serious. Being racist is manifested in a huge variety of ways, some subtle, some extreme. As pointed out by others earlier on, I was commenting on the only descriptor used about the intruder (other than gender (more on this in a minute)).
It smacked of ingrained habitual prejudice, and again, as others pointed out, no mention was made of other characteristics, and intuitively it didn't feel like the OP would've mentioned a white intruder's colour.
An important part of all this is context. To 'innocently' mention that someone is black in the context of crime is to ignore the impact of false perceptions that permeate white communities, something encouraged by more loathsome corners of the media. You have a responsibility to be aware of these circumstances, and to think twice about what you write/say (assuming you believe yourself not to be a racist).
I mentioned that the gender of the intruder was the other descriptor. This seems less problematic, because negative attitudes towards men (as a demographic) aren't stirred up unfairly in the context of breaking & entering. To give an example of where context and gender combine in the same lazy prejudicial manner, I'd suggest the times where people are intent on pointing out that the driver of a vehicle in an accident or near miss is a woman.
It's reassuring that intelligent comments have been made by some people during this thread, and that lfgss has not been completely overrun with the kind of ignorance pedlled by the Daily Mail.

By the way, I've just heard something horrible on the street. Strangely just after reading this thread.
I went to the shop with my daughter and while passing a woman who was taking money out of the cashpoint I overheard someone saying "Don't trust a nigger!". WTF?! A couple of people actually stopped too look around to identify the author. That Caribbean woman an the cashpoint accused a youngish Essex type of the slur, but he in turn pointed at someone else. Turned out it was actually some old bloke with shaved head and an Arsenal cap. Few people had a go at him (me included as I wasn't pleased my daughter had to hear it), that it's not 70s anymore.
Guy looked unfazed. WAC. It was completely unprovoked and unnecessary. -

Or Ms, that's more acceptable to some.
More racism! Will it never stop?!
