• I have a Super Record Strada chainset which I wish to use on my fixed gear conversion. The question is, what bottom bracket do I need? Rear spacing is 126mm.

Will a modern campy bottom bracket work, or do I need to source an old unsealed bb off the bay? What width?

    I've become terribly confused...

  • I'm having the same problem. My problem is that the broadest readily available BB in Campag is 115mm. Campag did manufacture a 120mm in the eighties but I haven't sourced one yet.115mm is not enough for the lugs thar house the chain ring bolts to clear the stays on the frame. Shimano provide the width but everyoune advises against, as the square taper is slightly different and the cranks would be in danger of coming loose. The alternatives are: 1) grind off the lugs on the Strada so that they clear the frame. 2) Sell the Strada and buy a genuine track spider from any manufacturer you like, inc. Campag, realising that the bracket will be acquired to match your choice.

  • you can use campy on a shimano. no problems i got a strada on a 110 with 120 rear wheel and perfectly straight chain line. never come loose. the taper is identical in its angular structure.

  • I wouldn't do it but Sheldon seems to say it's ok....

  • If you have the funds, Royce BBs work well with Campag tapers.
Not sure how well Phil Wood BB tapers fit, if they work, the steel variant can be obtained pretty cheaply from the states in any length axle also.

On my old bike I had a Sugino 75 which is meant to be an ISO taper. Cliff at Royce advised strongly against mating the two but I insisted. Within 1 MONTH I had a useless transmission. He said all along he knew his stuff was compatible with Campag....

  • Did anyone figure this out?
I've used mine before and had a 42mm but i've since sold that frame and BB and forgotten
    what it was.
I've pushed them on a 107mm shimano and that was way to short (straight on frame almost)
So i guess the 110 option?

  • Just about to try putting Strada cranks onto a 115mm Campag bottom bracket on a frame with 126mm rear spacing, so will post the results here.

  • .....Strada should be 120mm B/Bracket, Piste is 110mm

  • Hi Willo, Illy,

As per a thread a few years back, you both tried fixing double stada chainsets to frames with 126mm rear spacing for fixed gear conversions. Any recommendations on bb spindle length?

I'm looking to fit a Phil Wood bb (french cups). I understand I need a JIS taper. Is 111mm size sufficient? Would I need to grind down the inner chainring lips to make it work?

    Many thanks.

  • I used 111 with filed down inner lips on a conversion... but had to put 115 in a proper track frame with the same cranks...

    ISO taper for Campag though...

  • interessting thread, i'm about to do the same(campag strada on a 120mm trackframe). now brucy and chrisbmx post contradict each other, or is it the frame that comes into play? quite confusing.

  • We are kinda saying the same... 110/111 will work, although I did oddly need a 115 on my Raleigh until I put proper Pista ones on.
