Buying/Renting property in London: Where would you live?

I hear bad things - I hear good things. Need advice from people who know it first hand.

consider sharing a rented place usually ends up sideways I would never consider buying together with others part from a long term girlfriend. Imagine the shitstorm that can happen when you need to sell your bit - the buyer don't only need to like the place / location, also get on with your ex flatmates

or have i misunderstood the whole thing?
