Purely paper speculation, United have bigger fish to fry. They're looking for a world class replacement for Scholes, who have Liverpool replaced Alonso and Mascherano with? Two players who were in relegation battles last year.
In contrast United are after Sneijder who's won the champions league and played in a world cup final. If Liverpool want to get back in the champions league by following the Tottenham model they're going to wrong way about it because Adam is no Van Der Vaart and Henderson isn't fit to tie Modric's bootlaces.
....and this is what it boils down to: Many of you seem to be dinning on the (lack) of quality in Liverpool's signings and (in some cases rightly,) the prices that we are paying some some of them. Yet in the same breath many of you thickos are shouting to anyone that will listen 'how ALL Liverpool fans are deluded and it's a small club.' Fine. If a club doesn't even finish top 4...but SEVENTH what the fuck do you expect??? As much as I'd like to see it why the fuck would the likes of Hazzard or Juan Matta want to move to Anfield? We don't have the income of ManU the hard earned wealth of Chelsea or Citeh or the heritage/glamour/magnetism tottenham.
Hell, I wish my club could spend half a billion just to get top 4.
PLUS
Lest we forget: During the alonso -> madrid drama, their president himself admitted that there were not any players like Alonso around hence they were forced to pay the best part of £40M. Maybe you can tell us where we were supposed to find this replacement? To my mind the nearest thing was Tom Huddlestone.
