I personally have 2 levels of protection, one for throw ins, other for team games.
I only wear full leg pads and face cage for more aggressive games (league / tourney) but I really feel that the game is getting a lot faster and more aggressive so should probably wear full protection the whole time.
It depends how hard your throw ins are perhaps. If you feel like you could get a mallet in the face, then it might be an idea to get a cage. If you feel like someone shot could break your shin then get full length pads.
Just a bruise the size of my thigh. And wrist and chest. Odd that I've come off my polo bike many times but it hurts more on the commute apparently.
