I suppose he can upgrade to a decent chainset once his wallet has recovered from the frame

I had the same thought. Could even get a pair of wheels!

that be a campy chainset

Not in love with square taper at all, and there are several ways to go external BB on a track bike. I know world champions still use square taper so it must be OK, but the sheer feeling of solidity from the bigger axle is surprising, and nice. -

Fair call, the stiffness must make a difference when you're hoofing a sprint

Ridicilous chainring.

Needs high flange hubs.

looks like a young Joe Strummer.
I was going to say that!
But I was too shy and unsure. -

If it actually made any difference, you wouldn't see square taper on pretty much all the bikes at the World and Olympic championships. Subjectively, oversize axle feels much better, but Team GB, AIS, KNWU, FFC etc have big research budgets and haven't ditched their square taper chainsets, so there can't be any worthwhile objective performance gain from going big.

possibly the narrow q-factor has something to do with it.

The campy chainset is one of the best IMO, But yeah, only when compared to other square tapers. In cycling terms I'm a bit of a pleb. But even I can notice the difference in stiffness. Is it less noticable on the track?

The Campy chainset has the lowest Q-factor I know of. But I struggle to see why externals cant have the same. Either way you need your heel to miss both the chainstay, which is irrelevent to BB type, and the chainset center/axle. The external BB chainsets I have, look like they could be narrowed in the center. Maybe I'm missing something..

No it doesn't! Those frames are 88/89 - high flange hubs are definitely not period correct. Oh, and they would look like shit too
