I just tell Google Maps the start and end points, select walking mode to avoid main roads and adjust by dragging the blue line about.
Very rarely follow the actual route, just write down place and road names as pointers. Is Walsingham the place with the shrine? I once got held up there when I had to stop for a pilgrimage passing through.
