Entrapment is what you're talking about, however if the person is ready and willing to break the law.
With that bike locked on just the seatpost, it's likely to be called an entrapment as it lure people who wouldn't otherwise steal bicycle to have a go (as other have said - opportunity thieves).
it's a bit of a fine line at time, is there's really a difference between a normal regular thieves and those who decided to steal because the opportunity present itself?
Thanks Rumpole.

I would rather not confront them.

So you would approach these people and say 'I say, you boys, be off with you, stop taking things that don't belong to you or I'll call for a bobby'?
At least tell them that you've taken a picture and the police have altready been called (from a distance)...but yeah pictures are better than nowt.

Taking photos is a good idea, surely?
Then yell at them and draw attention so hopefully they stop. -

Glad to hear that you have a longer e-penis than the girl who took the picture...
iirc he chased someone and recovered a bike in real life the other week
if so he is really and virtually heroically endowed

I had my bike stolen on the Strand on saturday night (2nd July). It was a blue raleigh airlite 200 and I had locked it with a D lock which the thieves obviously sawed through since there were hack marks on the bike stand. When I called the police they said that this has been happening a lot recently.
I doubt I will get it back but I though I would post here just in case it appears somewhere. It had a crest on the frame that read 'Ray Freemans Cycles Norwich' so I think its unlikely there is more than one bike like it even if the frame is quite common. Thanks. -

Not mine, but circulating in case someone recognises them...

Entrapment wouldn't be the right word anyway - my partially-informed mind has entrapment down as being when someone from law enforcement sets up a sting in order to catch criminals. This is not allowed in the US, but is here (probably with a whole crapton of provisos).
I thought it was the other way around - hence George Michael getting caught out in the US by a plain-clothes officer who propositioned him, which would not happen (legally) here.

^^^^^I'll keep an eye out for them, did they snip through the hasp and take the padlock? thats what they did when they lifted my last bike :(

Hi Guys,
New the forum, but seems like a close community, so hopefully someone can help.
had a Specialized Langster stolen in Chelsea on Saturday afternoon, around 5.30. Right in front of the security guards of The Royal Hospital.
No distinguishing features really, apart for no stickers on it at all, apart from the little golden and white bits of tape of the seat up right. So it's just matte black all over, and had shimano a530 pedals. The right one is really scratched up from pedalling round a corner!!
The plebs that stole wont even know what they've got.
Went to brick lane on Sunday morning but nothing, and am checking bikeshd.co.uk.
Here is a picture of it. If anyone sees it, please let me know!
Josh

This is so true and a very good point. If London is supposed to be a cycling city, why are there not more bike racks. Hopefully people who can do somethign about it will pick up on the thread and do something about it.
When was the blog post written. I think I might post it about ab it and get the ball rolling.
Jessiclees, cycle stands are always being installed, but as London is constantly changing, others are removed at the same time, too. Overall, levels are increasing, but you're quite right that the pace of installation should accelerate.
The main problem is that there is comparatively little footway space in London, especially in the areas busiest with walking, and we're not far advanced yet politically to have in-carriageway car parking bays replaced with cycle parking bays consistently everywhere, although it is starting to happen in some areas.
Also, as I'm sure you know, cycle stands don't necessarily cause lower levels of bike theft. They may do if they're well-positioned, with good passive surveillance, etc., but getting all these things right is a bit of a dark art. :)

Here's the singlespeed puch that was stolen last night from Mitcham. TBH this is the one my friend is really gutted about as she only acquired it last night (from Foffa).http://www.flickr.com/photos/coshgirl/5901021112/sizes/m/in/photostream/

Yep, looks like I'm wrong.
Although it seems like it's not just black and white (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entrapment). Anyway, I haven't had my bike stolen (yet) and nor have my friends so I'll let this thread return to being on topic.

Has anyone had a Bianchi nicked? White frame with blue handlebar tape and says 'coast to coast' on the frame. Small-medium I'd say, 54cm.
Looks like a nice bike and a bit out of place so to speak where I saw it so PM me if that's you!

Hi,
My bike - which I bought from suami on here in January - was nicked last night from where I work in Hackney. It's inside a code-locked studio space so I'm shocked... Either way, it's a red Starnord French road bike, it was stolen from Dalston Studios near Hackney Downs station, and I'm banking on it turning up in either Broadway Market or Brick Lane. I'm utterly broke right now so I need it terribly. Plus, it's not worth a huge amount but I love it

There's something about smashing your way with a hammer into the reception area of the UK's biggest bike distributor at 2.30am to nick a mountain bike that's both terribly sad and kind of stupidly heroic.

Must have been worth their while that Madison display bike, honeslty thought he was going to ride away, then he just carries it? Ah well, if only they applied their Stirling efforts to something productive they would probably do quite well.
I think it's clear that the OP was trying to be helpful here, so I'm pretty sure there's no need to be such a prick about it.
