really old bike's problem

  • Hi there,
At first, I wanna inform it, there may will be some wrong English because
I ain't still familiar with this difficult language.
It means I also don't have much knowledge of this city!!
So I need you guys help.

A few days ago, I got this old folding bike from my friend, who left this country,
anyway I didn't notice a problem of it when I did test riding but,
I realised it has some problems..

    http://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_lnral0QUns1ql0kddo1_1280.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJ6IHWSU3BX3X7X3Q&Expires=1309780716&Signature=xZbM4%2BFnxPfQiMR8gTpIfLkqDyo%3D

    Honestly..rusted frame isn't a problem to me.
    thing is..

    • When i ride it, a front wheel makes ticking noisy and
a bit shaky in both ways (right to left).

    • It looks..it doesn't have a gear but my friend said it has been broken.

    • A rear brake line would be cut soon..I think.

I can't estimate how much it will be and I am worried it.
I have been looking for my tiny single speed bike sized 47cm..
So if it needs amount of money to fix I just wanna leave it.

    help me :o !!!!

  • omg..this pic was too huge...sorry

  • do a bearing overhaul for the hubs but a new/second hand wheelset sounds cheaper then getting another bike. and a new brake cable is a easy fit for yourself

  • it sounds like the front wheels "hub" needs to be serviced/cleaned with new grease. you can do it yourself with: tube of teflon grease £3, "cone" spanners £5 , paper towels .

a hub servicing is whe you undo the axle "cones" and clean all the yukky grease away from the ball bearings and surfaces and then put new grease and the ball bearings back inside and tighten them up exactly so that the wheel is smooth and normal again.

i dont understand whats wrong with your gears.. :S

a rear brake line is easy to cut :)

  • Thanks for kindness answer of toaster and chucklebruv!

Do you think I can do it by myself??

If I can I really wanna do it...coz I hope to learn of maintaining bikes...!

I think the axel of the front wheel was bent or the wheel was bent!

Because when it makes that weird sound, the bike was also bounced little.

    I already have a grease, wd-40 and a spanner..

So...do you think that it'd better to change whole part of wheel set??

  • Thanks a lot , i'm gonna try it when I go back home. :)

    Ps.

Here i am is look mum no hands at old street..
I found this website here :)

  • Use proper lubricants and grease instead of wd40

  • Thanks a lot , i'm gonna try it when I go back home. :)

Some of those old folder/shopper bikes are equipped with rather unusual sturmey archer/raleigh parts. If you find that your hub is missing locknuts on one side, dont panic! Its supposed to be like that.

  • Use proper lubricants and grease instead of wd40

yes, be careful because wd40 ***dissolves(!) ***grease. it makes it very good for cleaning your parts but you must not use it as a hub lubricant

  • Use proper lubricants and grease instead of wd40

Never use wd40 except for loosening your nuts ;-)

  • so glad to know it.
    what a shame..I haven't known it before.

I'm gonna go to buy the grease now

  • i rode home the otherday and my fron wheel felt 'bumpy' like moved right to left,

turned out somehow all my spokes where loose. don't think thats gonna be your problem, but if it still happens after you cleaned the hub then check the spokes.

  • Get yourself a good bike toolkit. I got mine from halfords for 30gold

  • I have to say a happening of today..
I tried to fix it by myself...then finally I realised every parts of wheel was loosen..
so did joint these, cleaned it!
but it still had a problem of wheel..it was bent so when I was riding, the front tire was
scratched to the frame which was stood the axel..

there was nothing I could do more so I turned to go back home..
( I did it in my friend's flat)

But when I was riding it...I gave up riding it..
the front tyre was almost murged so it was so heavy to move the peddal...

I parked it at old st..my flat is in dalston.

    Anyway I am desperate!!

  • Get thee to a bike shop! Get it fixed, then sign up for a maintenance course. Those are skills that will serve you and others very well for the rest of your life.

Yeah...I really deeply agree it.....I was frustrated for few days..
could you please recommend a shop for me?
As I already mentioned..I am a newbie in here, London.

  • Well, I'm in Winnipeg, so my local would not be your local.
I'm sure others here will pipe up.
    Good luck and happy wrenching.

  • hey well done for having a try at repairing it Jieun. This is one of the repairs which is very good to learn and once you learn it you will not forget

it seems like after your repair, the "cone" nuts were too tight and the wheel would not spin smoothly.

    1. you have to *loosen *one side again until the wheel spins freely/is loose;

    2. you tighten the cone-nut inwards until it touches the ball bearings

    3. then you make precise adjustments, tightening, until the wheel is ***secure ***but still spins round

    4. now the final step is to make micro adjustments to **tighten **the "lock" nut *against *the "cone" nut to **LOCK **your final adjustment. This part is the most difficult because you have to keep the "cone" nut still (not moving) and then screw the "lock" nut next to it and tighten it well.

this means that you may need 2 spanners/wrenches hold each one and do the job.

    1. Spin the axle to inspect your work.

Notes: there are **two **nuts on *each *side of the wheel, that is **four **in total. There are two so that they "lock" against each other and dont move.
