From Twitter, @rjamesjones had his bike nicked, but someone caught a pic of the two guys in action. Anyone recognise this pair?
Dirty thieving scum bags..

so... is anyone going to do a sting? you can do a remote detonation.. otherwise just badly lock it and loosen the stem, grips, underpump the tyres, itching powder on the grips and saddle, loosen the headset and follow with camera
share your criminal vids please

The latter would be opportunism, the former, I'd argue, shows intent.

This (bait biking, not sabotaging said lure) should surely be doable? Unfortunately, I rather suspect that as quickly as one winnows out thieves from one end, new, younger, more stupid thieves will join at the other.
Still, would make for an entertaining YouTube channel, if nothing else.

From the guardian blog:
Lack of secure places to lock bikes is a big problem. Interesting that hundreds of sites have been found for 'boris bike' racks, despite having to go through the planning process and many objections, yet there are far too few bike racks in London in general. A problem that has certainly put me off from cycling into the centre on occasion.
so true.

@djc Guess the theft was down to a poorly maintained / unlocked gate then? How many different people use that access? I would try a claim thru household insurance as its within the property, though as for getting bike back, after a few days, maybe a week tops before its properly gone.
Would suggest giving flatmates/housemates/other users of the gate a good kicking. Its one reason I hate houseshares - you ALWAYS get people that just don't give a shit/understand the value of anything. -

I think there is some legal reason under UK law that means the popo cant lure people into crime.. or the evidence of baited theft cant be used in court.. im not sure. Someone will probably know better.
I'm not sure if there is any law prohibiting the issue of a severe kick to the balls over a baited bike...
Entrapment is what you're talking about, however if the person is ready and willing to break the law.
With that bike locked on just the seatpost, it's likely to be called an entrapment as it lure people who wouldn't otherwise steal bicycle to have a go (as other have said - opportunity thieves).
it's a bit of a fine line at time, is there's really a difference between a normal regular thieves and those who decided to steal because the opportunity present itself?

This is so true and a very good point. If London is supposed to be a cycling city, why are there not more bike racks. Hopefully people who can do somethign about it will pick up on the thread and do something about it.
When was the blog post written. I think I might post it about ab it and get the ball rolling.

No, it's called a weak locking strategy (or just plain stupid, depending on where you stand) and the thief is still a thief.
Send the pictures to the police - the thieving scrotes are usually "known to the police" as they put it in the news.
Entrapment wouldn't be the right word anyway - my partially-informed mind has entrapment down as being when someone from law enforcement sets up a sting in order to catch criminals. This is not allowed in the US, but is here (probably with a whole crapton of provisos).

I actually have two bikes not only registered with Immobilise but also Immobitagged. It's very little use, in truth, as Police implementation of the scheme is incredibly patchy (only a minoriy of forces check the system and even fewer bother looking for the tags) and now they've abandoned it altogether.

Utter bastards, pisses me off that these guys can do this in full view and get away with it.
Got to be said that locking around the seatpost is pretty stupid.

You gotta love those cheeky working class people eh, with their baggy trackies and fighting.

I'm more intrigued by the kind of person that sees this going on and thinks the most useful thing to do is take a picture...
-
• #6698
So you would approach these people and say 'I say, you boys, be off with you, stop taking things that don't belong to you or I'll call for a bobby'?
-

What makes you think I speak like some kind of latter day dandy...?
Yes.
I would approach them. -

Glad to hear that you have a longer e-penis than the girl who took the picture...
Don't suppose anyone on here has had a red single braked single speed stolen recently? While waiting for a bus last night from Kingsland overground down to Old Street two guys caught my eye. The first one was riding a battered MTB while the guy following him was riding said SS which was about 2 sizes two small, plus he was texting with his hand that should've been on his only brake lever and wobbling all over the place.
