bad vibes.

  • so, ive just changed my chainwheel from 46t to 48t. and got myself a new chain.

been getting a vibration through the crankarm, the right side , the one the chain ring is attached too.

at first i thought it might just be the chain needing to break in or something. but , after a couple of hours ride today , it was still happening. ..... just put the old 46t back on , just to see what would happen and .... no vibration.

both chainrings are brev m . why would i be getting a vibration on the 48t ?

got me a reet bit peeved .

  • Is the 48 chainring new? Sounds like bent teeth to me. Does it vibrate at the same point? If so, check for a mis-aligned tooth.

  • this is the kind of mystery that makes me want to get the bus.

  • could the bigger ring be rubbing against the chain stay?

  • no wonky tooths. brand new chainring.

checked the clearance before initial instillation.

    ????????????????????

  • from your account it appears you have a worn chain and sprocket and a new chain

a worn chain will not fit so well on the new chainring

  • Chain's too tight.

  • this is the kind of mystery that makes me want to get the bus.

    The Mystery Bus?

  • ok.

old chain. old chainring. - no vibration.

new chain, new chainring - vibration.

new chain , old chainring - no vibration.

when i first put the new chain and chainring on. noticed the vibration. first thing i did was to slacken the new chain off.

  • have you checked for the beach boys?

  • dies

  • what size cog do you have at the back?

  • 17t. it happens on both the fixed cog and when ive flipped my flop, on the freewheel. wich is also 17t.

  • bigger ring - less teeth engaged on the cog - vibration perhaps (in theory)

either that or the chainring isn't exactly straight, i.e. a tiny bit off.

  • Chain's too tight.

first thing i did when i felt it. but not enough, cos ...............

set it up again today. determined to get to the root of the problem, with the chain super slack.

    i am a tad embarrased.

    oh well.

    cheers everyone!!!!

  • thing is , its currently on the freewheel side.

if i put it on the fix side, set the chain up with the correct tension and the vibration comes back.................

    aarrgg.

  • chainline?

  • aaarrrgggg

  • no, he's asking if the chainline is not correct, not for a pirate impression you heartie.

  • 46-17 is perfect anyway. Go back to what you had and forget this whole sorry saga before it's too late...

  • loose chain ring bolts?

  • absolutely not.

whilst browsing velo shop . com. i read that azumi standard track chains are regarded as noisy and heavy. could the vibration im feeling just be the chain needing to bed in ? or should it be super smooth straight from the start?

  • 46-17 is perfect anyway. Go back to what you had and forget this whole sorry saga before it's too late...

wisdom is something you get through experience.

i have a lot of experience.

still waiting for the wisdom to happen.........................

  • bigger ring - less teeth engaged on the cog - vibration perhaps (in theory)

I ride a Moulton, which required a 58t chainring to compensate for the small wheel, and it's quite noisey at smaller cog.
