There's a whole thread about this, some of the poloistas joined in.
Synopsis: Most poloers use Time (I think) those that don't use SPDs. If SPDs make sure you don't get the multi directional release ones.
Mrak thought he was super tough clipping out on an up pull, turns out they're supposed to do that. lol.

Edit, yes the plastic side is for non cleat shoes.
