  • The ex-wife of the seller of the house I'm buying has been declared bankrupt, solicitor is on case but thought I'd ask the internet. What do?

The Official Receiver will want to realise the greatest amount for ex-wifes creditors. If your solicitor is up to snuff then they may have a convincing position as chances are completion of transaction to you saves having to put the property up as a repossession. However this all takes time as the OR has to determine as much of the bankrupt's financial capability as possible before liquidising assets.

In short if you're prepared to wait (up to six months) you should get the place. Or you could pull out and when it goes up for repo you have an inside track as you've got documentation that will not be available to other prospective purchasers. More risk though.

It's always shite when property purchases go wrong, I sympathise :(
