Chains get worn, if it's really old get a new one, or clean and lube it if it's filthy. If the chain is slack, you can increase the tension by moving the back wheel in the frame ends.

1cm movement on the cranks is ok mate. undo the bolts and try to make it tighter tho. are you new to cycling?

yeah im pretty new to it mate and cheers ill try that see how it works out

Don't do it too tight though, make sure you can wiggle the middle of the chain about a cm or two. Look up Sheldon Brown --> chain tension
No matter how much I try and keep my chain tight(ish), it always sets itself back to about 1cm play like you described. I try not to let it bug me.
just wondering if this was normal there is a less and a 1cm give when im riding i dunno if its the chain thats to big or if its just the crank thats a bit rocky just wondering if this is normal as im new to fixed gear
