good to know.
so basically if i stay close to greenwich park I should be good?
and east of the park as opposed to west?as a side note: finding out about good places to live in london is not very easy, everyone says everywhere is shit. and places that aren't shit you have to be a millionaire to live in (or live with 15 people)
It's not easy, you have great little areas cheek by jowl with shit areas.
Deptford is a good place to look- I lived there and really enjoyed it, but then 2 French students were tortured to death down the road in New Cross by people who lived round the corner from me.
We were living in a £750,000 three floor place that was really nice- and people got shot 200 metres down the road, over nothing.
Londons like that.

True that.
Were I live, in Leytonstone, only one part is "okeyish" - Upper Leytonstone. Generally all the areas close to the Wansted Flats (as long as not blocks) or Whipps Cross.
What's the secret? Those are the areas where the houses are owned by people and not rented by the authorities. Makes a whole lot of difference. People still get shot, but at least there are nice begonias in the front yards. -

I found that Blackheath was quite affordable for a 2 bed flat (a few years ago now, but I was on a lot less money in those days), and Blackheath is really nice

we need to be close to goldsmith's college (New cross) but want to live in greenwich borough for school for my son.
blackheath, greenwich are the main areas...just testing the waters a little further west and south to get the feel for the area.
looking for a 2br place.
not going to get a place without seeing it, but I am starting to look now to get an idea of what the rent in areas looks like so when we get there fresh off the plane some letting agent won't think they can give us the once over and charge us an extra 100/wk

I have £600 to spend. What road bike do I buy? Just went to view one today but the seller forgot to mention in the ad that it has been crashed into a wall and the front end is buckled.

Ahh, borough of Greenwich is a bit of a fucker, most of that area is Lewisham.
Check the boundaries, then work from there.
Does it have to be Borough of Greenwich?
Anywhere round there will get you to Goldsmiths well enough.

Is he actually selling it here?

Blackheath is a really good place to live. Nice relaxed feel about the place. We moved here from hackney a couple of years ago.
You need to be more to the east of blackheath though if you are determined for a Greenwich school as the Lewisham border is close by.
Why are you so hot for a Greenwich school? They are a mixed bag too.. As everyone above mentions - good and bad are always pretty close together in london. -

overall got the feeling the schools in greenwich were a little bit better. but have noticed everything good and bad are all right next to each other so it really is going to be a crap shoot until we get there.
you have all jsut confirmed what I suspected, blackheath is our main area really, but we will see when we get there. can't live there if there arent any places in our price range when we get there.

Greenwich West, Blackheath/Westcombe area nice, and the Peninsula is ok but extremely dull and very car centric, the rest is a right off.

Thamesmead is a proper gladiator school, complete with high security prison.
I bought a sofa there off a very well spoken man.

^^ agree with Dammit about the three areas he mentions.

is eastern lewisham that much different than western greenwich?
i like to think imaginary lines won't make the difference in a neighborhood, but you never know.
-
• #13892
World of difference if you need borough of Greenwich for your nipper.
That imaginary line is very real, in that instance.

• #13893
am I off to think that greenwich schools are a bit better?

Not sure. I live is East London. I used to work in Woolwich Arsenal. Took my wife to Greenwich to see a place and she asked me to never go back there :-)
Loads of nice parks, though.

You see, in London (as in many big cities) you'd have to live for a while somewhere to know what's going on. You live round the corner - your school catchment is different. You see a nice row of neat houses on a leafy street? So what, on Saturday night on the rear of that cul de sac is a spot for junkies to score. You see a lovely rad squat next to a fixie bike shop? Coffee shop opposite full of merchant bankers. You can have anything, but not what you want.

for sure, thats why I am trying to hear everyone's opinions. I am sure there are some areas that people say to just clearly avoid. so far I seem to be going in the right direction.
basically if I dont have a crack house next door I am sure I will be happy wherever I end up.

I've just had police rolling into my neighbourhood. A gang of yoofs who don't even live here was making noise in the car park. I've noticed a car parked over there with some boys on bicycles running errands for the passengers for quite a few days now. They're obviously selling.

and thus life in the city continues on. they will stay on your street and then in 2 and a half months they will be on my street (when I have a street)

Tony, what places do you have to be near?
