A cur is a dog that doesn't scratch in a fight - when separated, dogs are taken back to their corner by their handlers, behind their line. A game dog will scratch with its paw, a cur will turn away from the other dog...and lose. Best you don't ask me how I know...
I have no idea if this is what Digs meant when he used cur. Might've been a typo :)
