Well done :)
Ha! I've got no beef with you, I'm just being pedintic :-)
-
• #47228
Something might be pedantic to you but quite offensive to some one else
-
• #47229
You seem to find everything very offensive though to be fair

....
...I'm after a light/day tourer that I can go weekend camping with (rack, guards, comfort etc).
Not sure if I want a low fixed gear or actual gears.
...
A friend said a classic 5 speed build. sounded cool but a good quality indexed set up probably don't exist (?).
another mate said all modern or all classic. so was thinking 105 it up.Now I'm thinking hub gears...
Also, will a quill stem fit over these new fangled ergo/comfy bend bars?
Taking your points in turn:
That looks like a good frame for what you're after. The only thing is there don't seem to be braze-ons for a rack, so if you want to go camping it might be a problem. There are ways to get around not having braze-ons for racks, but I'd wonder if they'd work/be strong enough if you were carrying all the equipment you need to camp for a weekend. Have a read of the two touring threads.
Fixed or gears - I think it's pretty well documented that there's no advantage to fixed (other than physical challenge) and loads of gears is best.
5 speed - personally I think it's fine in the city, but when you can get 7-speed screw-ons that will work on the same hub + a front mech = 14 why bother? Also I take it you don't have a wheelset yet, so again you've got no constraints. For what you want I'd think you want 9/10 speed with a big range.
...Also the main thing to check is your rear spacing. if it's less than 130mm you should get it re-spaced. It will make your life a lot easier. Have you read all of Sheldon Brown yet? You need to.
5-speed indexed - if you mean on a downtube, yes you can, but like I said ^ why, when it doesn't sound like what you are after.
Hub gears - No idea. Check out the touring threads. Seem to be some pros and cons, but it sounds like you also want a roadish bike to just go on rides with.
Bars - lots of people rate randoners which would suit the build nicely. So that could be a good alternative.
How much do you want to spend?
If it were me, to start with, I would get a second hand groupset, something like a early-mid 2000s shimano groupset, with sti shifters. Easily available wheels, and cheaper cassets than campag. Then ride through the summer and then have a think about what you do and don't like.
And finally... that's a lovely frame.
What have you learned on this forum so far?
- visible welds are anti and a sign of poor quality.
- old + Italian = porn, always.
- matching colours = anti, non-matching colours = anti too.
- if it's not expensive it's anti.
...more?
Very good summary of the forum.

As summaries of the forum go, it's shit.

If you buy a cheap track hub, id rebuild the wheel for you. Would be infinitely better imo.
Thanks for the offer but I'd like to try and keep the original hub if I can, the rest of the bike is completely original apart from the tyres as far as I can tell.

the point is that's a stupid idea.
try reading the link they posted up there^

Right - My Carlton track is at a framebuilders - Small crack in the seatclamp. Unfortunately this means the powdercoat in that area is getting f*cked up. Time for a fresh one (Can't afford a proper re-spray unfortunately)
Is black a sensible, hard wearing, and less likely to get it nicked colour? Or just boring?

Its not often I would post in here to tell you about a saddle change, but I am. I forced the guys at putney cycles to sell me a test saddle, which was not for sale. It even says, not for resale, which makes me happy. I'm so happy that I managed to buy it, that I'm telling you about it now. Its going on the TT bike I posted on page 943.

Sell it me.

Maybe... offer me some pounds...

I just checked out your bike, it deserves it more.
And i'm selling the frame.

I'm not sure, the colours look pretty spot on beside yours. but hey. I'm happy to keep what is not for sale...

popped to the lbs today and sorted out my missing bolt on the seatclamp and the headset wobble - no brakes yet and no new bars yet but took it out for a brakeless spin - it's so frickin short the toe overlap is insane!!
cant wait for the s3x to arrive

Are you going for modern compact dropbars?
I've just finished building up the Concorde winter/rain bike. It'll get ridden properly tomorrow morning. I'll take a photo.
It took close to 3 hours of filing, cutting and delicate bendāge to find the 1mm of extra clearance needed for the mudguards.

Just dropped it off at Oak Cycles for rear mech hanger to be taken off (it was brutally added at some point in it's life).
Not sure what frame is it, as it becomes a normal story with my bikes. Frame is pretty light, probably Reynolds 531 or 531c, very common Nervex lugs. It has Dave Russell head badge sticker, but it could have been applied at any point. Frame came without fork but now has nice matching Gazelle track fork on it.
Will try to build it into stealthy beater-ish bike, so i can take apart, respray and rebuild my nicer bike.Sorry for crap phone pictures with no decent light at all, will make some better ones when i get it back.

That'll make a tasteful beater, the seat lug looks quite smart also.
What's it saying bar wise? You thinking drops or carbon risers ;) HA!
Keep us posted with that. -
• #47248
Top tube is pretty short, so drops should feel comfy on it.
No carbon this time. I've got another project for it :) -
