After 20 years I doubt the owner of it is the person who nicked it all them years ago. If i was you, I'd leave a note explaining the sentimental value of it and how you know its yours.
That's if you want it back, or just blood.

The current owner may be the offspring of the original thief. Kidnap him and torture for more info.

Let go, its only a bike.

its never only a bike
some time back a green beater of mine got nicked out of the garden,
found it months later locked in town, asked the plod what to do, said i cant prove it,
so i locked it with a decent lock and stuck a label on it, asking for it back
dude didnt unlock it so I went back and smashed his lock to pieces and got my green fix back
loved that bike, since then it has been sold by me to a young aspirant,
who got it powdercoated, and now i see it around in a different colour:)

Months is a bit different to 20 years, if someone left a note on my bike saying it was their's and was stolen 20 years ago, I cant prove it but can i have it back please, Id have a good laugh and go on my merry way.
Sorry but shit happens, as has been said, it could have had many many owners since you lost it, don't take out the fact it was stolen from YOU on someone that most likely bought it in good faith.

if you are going to suffer psychological trauma as a result of seeing it again,
I can get my hands on a 501 frame thats sitting around waiting to be built up, its a raleigh of some sort so you would have to colour it in with crayons to make it look the same but youre welcome to it

re-reading my post it sounds insensitive, apologies, it wasn't meant to be, just realistic

When I had that bike I was a racing whippet. I didn't get another geared road bike until last month. Been through a few mountain, fixed bikes since, but I think I wouldn't be 15 stone now, if that bike hadn't been stolen. Someone owes me a yellow jersey.
Glad to see it being used. Wouldn''t fit me now anyway.

It got stolen from her flat's communal area. She had blue/white fade make-up to match my bike.

It's o.k if you're also a minor. She was older anyways. would only give me a blowy with a fruit pastille in her mouth. Bit raw 'til the sugar dissolved.

Shit man, it's yours, you don't magically bump into something you lost 20 years ago if it wasn't meant to be. Leave a note on the bike explaining the story and offering to give them a replacement bike of equal value if not slightly better, assure them of your best intentions. The story is so far-fetched it has to be true and they'll hopefully feel the same. There's no way after so long that the current owner is remotely linked to the thief.

No, you are magically reunited with it, instead.

A friend of mine came across her bike that had been stolen a few years previously. Got an angle-grinder, and took it back.
Left a note saying the bike was stolen, and she was the rightful owner. Sorted.
I''ve been driving past a bike that looked similar to my old bike for a few weeks now. It's been locked up outside a piano shop in the daytime.
Today I stopped right alongside it in the traffic. Had a good look and fuck me, it's me old bike. I can tell as it still has the non matching brake levers I put on. An upgrade to aero levers.
I got it as a birthday present when I was about 14. I did about 150 miles a week on it back then. You couldn't get me off the damn thing. It is a British Eagle Tri with Reynolds 501, 105 groupset, with a nice blue/white fade paintjob. I can remember my Dad having to lie to my Mum and sisters about how much it cost (£300). He was really into his bikes back then.
So, 20 odd years later, what shall I do ?
