It's hardly 'cheap', since it costs you possession unless you're bloody good at shooting.
It's fairly easy to hit an open net from your end of the court if there are no players in the way.
maybe i'm wrong, but i would say there are very few players in london who can 'easily' hit a shot (with force) from the opposite end of the court into the goal hole
but
hopefully if playing ability increases at its current rate, then everyone on court will be at that skill level, and then the rule makes more sense (in the context of a future game with awesome players on court who can all shoot with lasers)
