something that may be of use to, but not in its current state is a hub with currently a Shimano 7 speed cassette mounted on a 3 speed internal gear hub. Its built on a 26 rim but can easily be ripped out and rebuilt into a 700c rim, it has an MTB twist grip changer too. Its £20 plus postage if we can't meet up. PM if interested.
The CTC has a Tandem Club you may advised to ask/view stuff etc- I have seen the headset arrangement but never played with one. I suspect the bolt required is a seat bolt, and in some ways is a fore runner of the ahead set.
V brakes are good on a tandem but the "Travel Agent" to convert to drop handlebar levers are unfortunately lots of dosh, it may be prudent to have straight or riser bars and levers to match.
Best of luck !
SJS stock and are tandem experts and will give you advice- their chainsets are certainly worthy of a look.

As a possible suggestion, you could buy this (my tandem) and canabilise it for parts:

thanks for all the useful info El_Diablo. I'll hold on the wheel for now (as think I'll be spending so long building/sorting other bits I'm not up for building a wheelset (yet))...
The headset shell on it at the moment does look like it would just clamp onto a stem and a 1 inch headset nut on the top would hold everything in place. But I'd need an oversized stem...I think they exist...I'll get onto the CTC guys and see what comes up.
I'm thinking of north road style bars for this - laid back sunday riding seems more likely for this than getting my fiancé into racer mode!

http://www.lfgss.com/thread63921.htmlMine's an old sun frame too I think thanks gav...but whilst all your parts would fit I don't need everything and want more modern (or long life) parts for the rest. So the hunt continues...
3 or 5 speed 27" sturmey wheelset would be a good start...anyone?

Sounds like a money pit, but in a good way! Good luck.

I now have the wheelset and stem, but still on the hunt for the front eccentric bb, a threadless bb for the rear (can't find the right size for the life of me - it's like they never actually made one to fit!) and seatposts (thanks colm but I'm on a tighter budget)
and a stoker stem!
Whatchagotbicyclefans?
This ^ ...needs to get out in the sunshine! It has a shopping list though as I'd prefer not to carry it around. If you're looking for a trade on bits let me know and I might have something to keep you happy so let me know what you're looking for.
1/. eccentric BB for the front
2/. Rear threadless bb - 73mm wide and 35mm diameter (ish)...I can't find the actual size anywhere but a 73mm threadless would solve my problems!
3/. 2x seatposts both 26.2mm diameter
4/. Stoker stem (missed one on eBay recently - grrrr)
Cheers y'all
