  • How do we make 'no blocking' a rule then?

The rule against shooting from your own half seemed to get passed on the basis of a few people deciding they didn't like it. So do we need, say, three active voices on a thread to get a rule passed?

  • Slow down, Rupert. Read what Josh said.

  • Essentially it's about playing the ball, not other players. If you're off the ball then you should be finding space, not hassling players. You could write a rule around that kind of stance in my opinion.

I already use the "are they playing the player or the ball" definition to work out fouls and things after chatting with Bill (trying to ditch the intention thing). You couldn't keep an eye on all three players to enforce a "no screening" kind of stance in my opinion though and there are loads of grey areas (mainly because our "sport" isn't written down/developed enough yet).

The grey areas and difficulty in enforcing are pretty big stumbling blocks, it may not even make for a "better" game too (would be a good experiment though).

    Right, back to videos....

This is the wrong place to agitate for rule changes. I haven't participated in a rules committee, and I am not sure how it works, but I can guarantee you this is not it.

As a ref, the last thing I want to see is lots of different rule-sets in different cities.

SOMEONE START A NEW THREAD! Although i may not particpate, this video thread is the main reason i look at LFGSS, even though Rik has one of these threads on pretty much every polo forum out there ;-)

    Hockey?

Hockey has a two minute interference penalty.

As far as screening goes. If someone blocks my path to the ball, to a pass, to going to my goal, by physically placing there body in my path, i feel i'm justified in un-blocking them.

Most definitely. With our current ruleset, if you're blocking someone's path to get to the ball or the player with the ball, then you're essentially playing the ball, and therefore you should expect to be "safety buffered". I caught a few people by surprise in Toulouse with my own safety buffers.

    ======

All that said, if we can't get a rule on this, then we should require big courts (40m or more long, 18m or more wide). You're hard pressed to find interference as a central strategy on big courts.

  • I didn't know whether to put this in videos or in news.

Did a small demo game for Edinburgh council as a way of securing UKBPC funding. No barriers so we were playing tame, but still good fun. This is in one of Edinburgh's busiest streets in the city centre.

But then.. if you know what you're doing, you can make a vid like this.

The vid is feel-good to-fuck. Pure positive polo vibes. Come to our tourney, we want you all to have a good time:

Fucking hosers, coming over here, telling us what to do. Piss off back to lobp, fucker.

  • I'm referring to: you are chasing the ball carrier, then ball carrier's team mate comes and blocks you. The ball carrier's team mate should be in a decent position to receive a pass and create an awesome play that leads to a goal.

But that's offensive screening, which is quite different to defensive screening, and isn't done in most sports, whereas defensive screening is.

In football offensive screening is obstruction, and is a foul, defensive screening is man marking, and is legal. There is nothing wrong with putting yourself between the ball, and an attacker from the opposite team, to block a pass.

  • I keep watching the first 15 seconds of that Spring Break video over and over.

  • I like the mumbled groan from the crowd.

  • Someone in the background just says "Oh Adam" and sounds really sad.

  • No left side tackle as you are very likely to get hit by the follow through. Shoulder to shoulder contact is allowed but barging into someone is not.

Hmm, field hockey is one of the few sports i've never played, so I have no idea how that works there.

  • In Brisbane, a major news channel asked some Brisbane polo players if they could interview them and film them playing polo on a saturday morning a few weeks back.

Everyone turned up at 7am to be filmed, and obviously included in the interview information about how the Brisbane Councillor had sponsored the nationals to be held there last year, and how wonderful that was, blah blah blah.

Instead of using any footage from that day, they cut up some vids of the Nationals 2010 and made this one instead

http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fau.sports.yahoo.com%2Fvideos%2Fwatch%2F25588684%2F248154%2F2%2F&h=67e3b - I think it's on the second page of the videos, first of the second row.

Everyone is mostly laughing it off in Aus, but it actually makes me feel quite sad that such a negative attitude would be chosen for the report. Boo, australian journalism. I know channel 7 news isn't a likely candidate for the Walklies, but still sad.

What? There's a rule against shooting from your own half!?? When did that happen!?

  • On a reset, a goal off a "cheap shot" will be disallowed.

  • you can shoot from your own half, if somebody on your team has crossed the line

  • It's hardly 'cheap', since it costs you possession unless you're bloody good at shooting.

Does anyone have any idea where this was decided? I'll take my objections to the correct thread if I can find it.
