  • Troll.

  • Really, why?

^ FYI it's not the number of gears that gives you oomph. It's the ratio. The smaller the rear cog and the bigger the front the faster you'll go. There are gear calculator online you should also try reading Sheldon brown.

  • The range gives you oomph. a range of 40 GI to 100 GI is enough for most road cycling, and is independent of the number of gears you have. But for a given range, the number of gears you have will determine the size of the jumps between them.

It all depends on what you want to use the bike for.

  • the 'oomph' comes from the legs

  • Thanks all. I've actually gone for some Weinmann XR19s, erring on the side of caution for now which at the very least stops me wasting money/life on the tube every day. I'll see how I go and whether I venture towards SS in the future. If so I'll have some XR19s for sale :)

  • Soon in the UK?

  • Hi,

I too am unable to start a new thread so I hope posting this here is ok. I have recently built up a new front wheel after finding a low flange brand new miche primato hub for €15. I thought this was a good deal. The wheel is as follows:

28 hole low flange Miche Primato front hub (Silver)
Silver DT spokes with silver brass nipples
    Mavic cxp33 28 hole (Black)
    23c Gator Hardshell

I am looking for a new rear wheel to compliment this. I was going to go with a mavic open pro, but it seems that bikes look better when both rims match... I dont know if you think the same but my original plan was to get the slight aero benefit of the cxp33 up front with just an open pro at the back

Anyway, if I do plan on going with a cxp33 to match at the rear, what hub would people suggest (bearing in mind that I do not want the rear miche)? I have grown fond of the low flange look, so I was thinking DA7710. However, these are quite pricey. I used to have a high flange gran compe w/ deep v that was very heavy, but now i'm looking for something more lightweight.

I am around 63kg at the minute, and I sometimes have to cycle on pretty bad roads, but never jump off stuff or anything. So I was wondering if 28 holes with a low flange hub with cxp33 rim would be strong enough, ie the same front and back. If not, would a 28 hole high flange hub with cxp33 rim be strong enough? or would 32 holes be best?

I am in Ireland so I would like to buy something here, ie not On One/Planet X/ Goldtec/whatever else that can only be bought online, even if they are very good quality. You can get most of the stuff here anyway. I am aware that this post is quite long so thank you for reading.

  • Quite a challenging search. I did look for a low-flange black rear track hub, but was stymied. There are loads of high flange black rears, but I could only find silver ones, from Shimano and Campagnolo. Keep looking though, as I'm sure you'll find it. It may just be that I missed it.

  • Surly do black low flange,
Novatec do silver low flange 42euro(32h front & rear set) plus postage from Taiwan

  • Speaking of which, in my failed search, I came across the Sun Ringle Eco front hub. A very nice looking thing, slightly reminiscent uber-sexy Schmidt SON (dyno) hubs. But, it strangely comes with a 10mm axle, for a front wheel. I only came across this in the Espresso wheelsets. Now it appears that it may not be as uncommon as I, or others, had believed.

  • The sun ringle was heavily discounted on CRC, might still be on sale

  • thanks for all the help. I am really being swayed towards the DA7710 for some reason, even more so than the 7600. The campagnolo are a bit more expensive again I think. I would like those low flange gran compes in silver if I could find them too. I think I might stick with 32 holes to be on the safe side though.

If I was to go high flange I think I would just stick with a silver Gran Compe, they are fixed/fixed and seem good quality to me.

  • Gran Compe are solid hubs. I've had two pairs.

  • thats true. Also, does anyone have any preferences regarding the two dura ace hubs? are the 7710 hubs better sealed/ do they roll better? I'm struggling to see an upgrade from the 7600, or is it just high flange versus low flange? They both cost the same and I assume they are both made to the same quality...

  • just flange size

  • yes and no, you need to have into account the import duty

that place use to be the best place to buy them, tho

  • Has anyone seen Dia gran compes in black 32h front? Can't find any for a non stupid price @ £50+

  • Advice needed.
Got an old track frame with 110 rear spacing. Want to get phils (wanna low flange nice hubs and not so keen on dura ace). Because the hubs will probably outlast the frame, is it more sensible to:

    • get the 120mm one and cold set the frame (not quite comfortable with that) ?
    • buy 110mm hub and not worry about using it with spacers in the future?

    Thanks in advance

Both viable options, but I'd cold set the frame.

You only need 5mm per side.

  • Hi

Can someone recommend a good value rim to go on the on-one hubs?
Building my first fixie on the cheap. And just need the best bang for the buck.

    Thanks

    Rigida Chrina.
    Alex DA22.

    Thanks.

Any other ideas? just checking options.

  • Well there's probably a couple hundred that would do the job. You might want to be more specific.

    Desired depth.
    Desired hole count.
    Desired colour.
    Budget.
    Braking surface?
    Lightweight, or tough?
