  • ^I carry those locks every day it's not that bad.

When I first started cycling I was bricking it about locking up outside in london, I thought the second I turned my back someone would jump out from behind a tree with some boltcutters and have away with my pride and joy.

the reality is that bike theft is rife but by the same token there are thousands and thousands of bikes in london, most of which are poorly locked. lock yours properly with decent locks and chances are unless the thief really wants THAT bike they'll move onto something easier to steal.

one thing I'll say is don't rush the locking up bit. find somewhere suitable, spend the time getting the locks on the right bits, usually it's easy but sometimes try as you might you won't be able to get the same lock on the same pole you've locked to for months and will get frustrated and the temptation is to say fuck it, that'll do and just lock less securely leaving the wheel exposed or something like that. that's when you invite theft much more openly.
