That's the key advantage of the designs that wedge between floor and ceiling.
I was searching for a drill bit earlier and was therefore in a DIY place and they had plasterboard hangers that looked perfect for a bit of adapting as bike hangers.

I think that a tweak here or there of the pedal hanger would do, for the reasons you mentioned - they stick too far into the room, as there's clearance for very wide flat bars. They should have done a shorter one for drops/narrow bars. As for marks on Walls, a black paint stripe would fix that, cos yeah it's not ideal.
I don't care about marks on the wall. It's my damn wall.
The other problem with them is that they let the bikes tilt, rather than keeping them level. But they are great otherwise

No need for improvement on this design... http://www.cycloc.com/
Now, what would be really good would be secure bike parking / bike lockers which people could rent from the local authority - turn some resident's car parking bays over to resident's bicycle parking. Design a means of persuading local authorities that it would be a good idea; now there's a challenge.
ah but it's £60, not ideal for students..
and yeah youre defo right there about the bike parking thing, if this was a longer term project i'd probably look into something like that

Please, say college or university. Just not 'Uni'. It makes you sound really fucking young... Oh wait...
#oldguypretendinghe'snot...well i'm only 19, most people call it uni dont they? as for tweaking current products, it definitely works, but not every bike owner is gonna want to do that or be able to do that.. i think there's definitely still a market for a design that works out the box

i first looked at this thinking 'what the hell is that massive tube by the front wheel'
i think i died a little inside when i realised that i was being thick and it was just a pepper grinder that was closer to the camera.Father Ted:

Have a Google for Ikea Hacker bike stand, this is about £40 all in and looks quite nice:
wow, i like that one, looks nice and simple, in fact the whole ikea hackers site is cool, hadn't heard of it before!
any ideas whether this might work for a mixte frame as well, maybe by tilting the hangers?? -

I dismantle my bike and box it everytime I get home.
numerous boxes in different rooms/combination safes.
to the OP - for one bike, a stand that holds it vertically takes up less space in terms of other furniture. we have something like that 2 bike silver thing^^ but in wood. it works well, and adjusts to heigt of room.
aesthetically i have seen some nice single bike ones that double as a shelf on top. presumably to keep a copy of Zinn!

As a student with limited space i just deal with it and chuck my bikes wherever there is space(kitchen, bathroom, hallway). if i leave tyre marks on the wall i just use an eraser to get rid of them.
Also some rental properties like the places students live wont appreciate you drilling into their walls to fit a bike rack.soapstone works a treat. thanks to Mechamorgan's dad for that one!

unless of course you have a sloping toptube/no toptube.
