firstly epic facepalm, mammoth's (Mammuthus primigenius) died out at the end of the Pleistocene, around10,000 years ago.
Secondly, yes they are elephants, Indian Elephants (Elephas maximus indicus) to be precise.

Surely a pun as 'mammoth' can be used to describe something big or epic.
