If you're not set on the idea of a Brompton, might you be interested in a Mezzo D10? Same wheel size as a Brompton, but a very different frame and 10 speed 105 gearing. I have a very lightly used one of these which I bought a year ago in the belief that I'd find it useful (and also because I'd got a ride2work voucher for Evans shortly before Evans decided they no longer stocked the bike I had really wanted to buy...).
