Vibrations when pushing ?

  • Hello. I noticed that my single speed (fixed gear) fuji classic track, 'vibrates' when i push hard on the pedals. It doesn't matter which pedal....once i reach a normal speed and need to mantain it or accelerate, whenever I go to the 'strong' point of the circle (that is when the pedal is in front), i feel vibrations. I can't understand where it comes from.

At first I thought that were the straps, vibrating because of the wind. But it's not, it is something else. I also was thinking that the rim, under pressure, was bending towards the brake....but i get vibrations also if I stay sitting on the seat (and not standing up on the pedals)....so yes, i don't really need that energy for it to happen. And it has nothing to do with the speed of the wheel: the vibrations arrive whenever one of the two pedals is IN FRONT (that is, is not really combined with where the rim is rotating at the moment).

    what can i check ?

  • Wow...

  • yo head.

  • Tighten everything properly. Check chainline. Give bike to mechanic.

    First one - http://www.sheldonbrown.com/creaks.html
    Second one - http://www.sheldonbrown.com/chainline.html
Third one - Take it to your local bike shop if 1 & 2 don't seem to improve things.

Can I also suggest that you look into this to expand your technical knowledge of bikes - great starting point for learning the basics and more. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/haynes-bike-book

  • ...i feel vibrations. I can't understand where it comes from.

    Puberty can be confusing.

  • Make sure your chain is tensioned properly

  • i think it's the chainline. I guess it is too diagonal. Since they replaced my chainring with a multi-gear one, the line changed....i will mount the chainring on the inner line and see if it's right....but it will look so bad....with the spider on the outer side and the chainring inside....and sorry for my english, i hope it's clear, in another thread i had post a picture.

  • Why were you not given a singlespeed chainset as replacement for the wonky one?

  • because they are wankers....i'll live with that until i can afford some sugino stuff. although i am really not happy with the look of my fuji classic track frame...maybe one day i'll just change frame and transfer everything from the fuji to the new frame.

  • pedal needs oiling
i use wet lube, it has oil consistency but lasts longer.

One thing at a time though perhaps?

The seller can't fob you off with a double crankset. It needs the single which you've paid for. If they refuse, tell them they can have have there bike back, that they're arranging a courier and that your getting a refund.

  • yes i'll tell them...but ok we're speaking about a FSA tempo...not really the best components, with a few euros i could buy another one. i don't know, the stress i would have by sending back, speaking on the phone and everything is not worth the candle i think.

  • Is it a double?

Perhaps mount the outer ring on the inside of the spider?

  • i mounted on the inside. i was sure the chainline was a problem, in fact it was pretty much bending to the right....mounting the chainring on the inside solved the chainline (it looks like it looked with the old singlespeed chainring). But the vibrations didn't stop. I can't get it working....i don't know, I have had this vibrations since i mounted this new chainring. Do I need to change chain? Everything is new, it cannot be that something is consumed....so I really can't understand. I tried tensioning the chain, un-tensioning it....but as I said, I have never had any problem with the old chainring, and I have unmounted the wheel several times so it's not that I can't put the wheel right. There is a problem and I can't find where.

notice the noise. The chainring is straight, it doesn't look straight i think because of the camera wobbling.

  • oh and i mean noise = terrible vibrations

  • Chain is too tight, back chain tension off a little to make vibrations go away.

  • You have beautiful woman's legs encased in beautiful loon pants and also beautiful woman's feet.

  • but then why, with the same tension, I had had no problems until now (before this chainring)?

thanks for the woman's compliments but i am the owner of the awful black-socked-feet on the left

  • Chain is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too tight

  • terrible vibrations

  • hmhmhm lol i was really sure the chain had to be even tighter than this (i used to ride like this and no vibrations with the old chainring).

but if the chain is now too tight, how come that some people need to 'walk' the rear wheel in order to tighten the chain? I mean i used just my fingers and tighten the bolts....and it's already, seems, TOO tight. So what is the point of walking the wheel (fastening one side, tightening the other, and repeat) ?

  • Piss take thread. Very good "rogermorse" you almost had us there for a minute
