What is it that makes this cassette 'mtb' as apooosed to 'road'?*
The fact that the nominal maximum sprocket size for Shimano road rear dérailleurs was 27t in the 7-speed era. You'd have to be at the lower extremity of permitted axle to pivot centres distance not to be able to get away with 28t on a road mech., although you'll need the GS version unless you have equally old school close ratio double chainrings, as you only have 10 teeth difference to play with after fitting that cassette with a short cage RD.
