Old frame or New

  • I'm thinking about starting a new build. So first i gotta get the frame right? So i thought i would come on here and try and get some advice from some people who know alot about bike :D

EDIT after much criticism of me being an idiot, I'm looking for a weekend one for pretty long rides. My budget is maximum £2k (I've been saving a while).EDIT

So my question is whether i should get a new, swanky carbon fibre frame, or go second hand for solid vintage number?

    cheers

  • it rather depends on you. what do you want from the bike?

  • your budget? and your intended use, track racing, commuting, hilly weekend rides?

  • you get a lot more bang for your buck if you buy second hand. but like above, it really depends what/where you riding and your taste!

  • buy NOS. and don't ever lean.

  • Where do you get NOS from though? Buy online, big shops (evans etc) or lbs?

  • Oh this might just have the whiff of Butterkist about it... Toffee or Salt?

  • Riding around town? Steel. Riding up hills? Carbon. Riding the town bike? Prophylactics.

  • lol nice and simple gav :D

  • You do actually have to give some idea of what you're going to use it for and what kind of ride you're after. If it's for bike polo, that's one thing. A commuter bike, that's something else. If you want to impress on the track, different again. Do you want it to look good (and if so, good vintage or good modern). Some of these will be easier with a vintage frame, some not.

  • NOS frame with an inverse shim - good for pretty much all duties cycle wise

    steel is real don't forget

  • How vertically compliant do you need the frame to be?

  • I want to buy some new jeans, what people think, blue or grey ones? I cant decide.....

  • To be honest any frame will be fine, as long as it has magnets in the top tube.

  • it's all about the lateral torsion for 2012

  • I have both and ride both. New frame for general use and old Japanese steel for Sunday best.

  • I ride exclusively steel 'cos they go on forever. The old 1950's ones I so like have been handmade by craftman all those years ago, and having survived over half a century don't generally drop in two bits. Whilst the carbon is undoubtly lighter, I reckon its kinda souless, factory built and fragile.

  • Vintage or NOS, ALL THE WAY.

  • you could get a frame made for your hight then go from there.. then you would have the perfect frame.. then go for your parts vintage or new? what do you think?

  • Made for my height!?!?! wouldn't that be ridiculously expensive!?/ I have no clue where i would go...

  • NOS steel on eBay. Get the best of all worlds.
