  • im still looking into the options. i need to pm David over the weekend to get a bit more info about what it involves. idea is still

    coach plus driver and
larger truck+driver/two smaller vans. if it was the larger truck+driver i would offer to be the support waggon for everyone on the night.

    Has this been resolved yet?

  • Nel-boogie are you still taking on bus organising. Understand if you aren't, total ball ache. You would become a forum hero though.

  • No, I only ever said I'd help, I don't want to organise it cos I've never done the ride so I don't know what to look out for. (somehow I can't make that sentence not sound harsh, I don't mean it to be harsh)

Spoke to someone yesterday who seemed to be taking responsibility for it. Am sure updates will be coming along in due course.

  • Doesn't sound harsh (but I'm foreign too so we're probably both coming across like a pair of arseholes).

Ill be driving support vehicle. Katie-coo is looking into bus e.t.c.

  • So what's it like in regards to staying warm or keeping cool?
I am picturing starting off freezing my bollocks off and then warming up but the night air keeping me chilled.
Or else stopping midway for the break, and getting warmed up, then being frozen again after stopping moving.
Has anyone done it at a slower pace, and not stopped at all?
I think this is what I would prefer to do. Whenever I stop my legs tend to sieze up, if I keep motoring along it works out alright in the end.

Apologies if this has been asked / discussed elsewhere before. I'm a relative newbie to Lahndan.

Best not to stop. Except for the halfway food and cup of tea. Or maybe a pub or two. Otherwise no point in resting for too long, just makes it worse.
Hasn't been cold the last couple of times so fingers crossed.

This is how I find it:
Usually it starts off just fine - short sleeves are okay, then about 11pm starts to get a bit chilly so on go the arm warmers. Then after the food stop (usually about 1-2am) put on every stitch of clothing I have with me and still my teeth chatter, this lasts for about 10 mins then off comes the jacket again and the rest of the trip is long sleeves/arm warmers ––––UNLESS IT'S RAINING ALL NIGHT ----- like a few years ago.

I've not done it without a break, but the time it rained all night I should have, after queueing outside in the rain for half an hour I was so cold and miserable. Last year I rode most of the route really quite slowly with an un-fit Oliver Schick (after doing in his elbow) and it was really enjoyable. Would have been better if some pubs were open later than they were though.

Ha ha, I nearly put you in just in case. Good times.

  • I've just booked Sunday night in a B&B in Dunwich so will travel back Monday. I did it back in '09 but on the roadie - though loads of people did do it fixed so it's perfectly do-able... I just prefer to have the luxury of freewheeling down the the (few) hills.

Also - the coach I was on had a terrifyingly bad driver. We almost crashed on numerous occasions, at one point he braked so hard I flew forward in my chair - was buckled in but it spoilt the nice snooze I was having. Another reason to stay an extra night and get the train the next day!

  • Had a daft idea:

If someone else (not me) is epic (stupid) enough to attempt it on a Boris Bike perhaps we could all chip in and cover the hire costs. I'd pay to see it done. It's £50 for 24hrs hire.

    Who's game?

  • I'm thinking of doing it on a (edit) cycle hire bike.

Would be great if costs could be covered. I'd like to raise some money for a worthy cause.

Going to do this geared, I think. We're booked on the SC coach for the return, but wouldn't mind tagging on to a Forum group leaving London for at least the first bit to give us a bit of navigational headstart.

  • I'm willing to put a pound towards seeing someone do it on a cycle hire bike (can we stop calling them Boris Bikes the idea was already in inception before his tenure began, he should not be credited for them)

  • ^ yep, also put me down for a pound to watch econodog (or anyone else) suffer 116 miles on a very un-racy "Bobo Bike*"

There you go, I didn't say Boris Bike - woops!

  • all you need is a dose of HTFU
