  • Anyone have any recommendations for powder coating companies/options in or around Oxford?

I know that Oxford Industrial Finishers don't take on such small jobs, and believe that's the case with Spectrum Powdertech in Bicester. Anyone tried Vale Powder Coaters (nr. Wantage) or Witney Powder Coating (in Witney, bizarrely).

I know a few of the Oxford bike shops will send frames away to get painted, but I'd rather cut out the middle man if I can.

  • I had mine powdercoated at PowerPark Autos near Banbury station back in 09 - was about 35 quid iirc.

Was made cheaper by waiting for someone else's cycle in the oven instead of paying for my own.

Friendly guys anyway, give them a try.

  • Good stuff. Thanks for the tip.

    Will give them a buzz.

  • I am currently, as I type, trying to phone various powdercoaters around Oxford. This is the story so far! Witney pc's no longer have a telephone that works. Vale pc's phone seems to work but the answering phone message sounds like someone coughing with no info what so ever. Kolorplast in Didcot just won't pick up and PPS in Aylesbury, although rude, are the only ones I got any answers out of!

curn....I'm taking some frames to be painted this monday come hell or high water. I'll enquire and once I get them back from wherever I'll post up the results!

I have to admit that it is ridiculous how many pc's there are around Oxford but none seem willing to deal with pushbike frames!

  • Bloody hell, you've been busy.

Will be very interested to learn how you get on - best of luck!

  • Cheers. I just spoke to Oif too. They're going to be getting back to me at some point today hopefully! They now use a chemical stripper which can be quite abrasive on aluminium as well as shot/sand blasting the frames too. I've used Oif when I worked at OCW and the results were always good:)
If I get a positive response from them later then I could take your frame with me too if you like! Let me know sooner rather than later as I want to get these done asap and I know that Oif are happier the more they have! Ta

  • Thanks for the offer.

Will eventually have two (steel) frames that need doing, however I suspect that I'm not going to be able to fit in within a short time scale - one of the frames hasn't even been delivered yet, and the wife hasn't decided what colour she wants it! Won't have time to deal with the other one for at least a week or so.

  • Okay. No worries. I think I'm going to go for Ppf in Aylesbury on a recommendation. I'll let you know the results as soon as I have them back by the end of next week hopefully:)

  • Dropped off today (is in fact PPS) spoke to a really nice chap called Steve who explained that, although he was happy to do my two frames he'd prefer it if there was a full job lot. i,e 5-10 frames. Should be done in a few days so I'll show you what they're like!

  • No photos yet but I'm very pleased with the results!

  • Good stuff.

Now have both my frames, and suspect they will both need some form of blasting before getting coated due to a few small patches of surface rust. Also not sure when I'm going to have enough money to get them done!

Will be interested to see the job done by PPS. How much did they charge in the end? Do you know if they would blast the frames too?

  • Yeah. They blast, degrease and it costs about 40-50 quid per frame. No sparkly finishes but all your favourite colours in gloss and matt! I'll get the photos up when I get home. Un fortunately no close ups but it is a good finish. Going back in a couple of weeks to get some more done if you're interested..

  • Great. Will pm you about your next trip.

  • Rang PPS and they told me they wouldnt powder coat bike frames! bit strange but oh well.

  • wierd......

  • awesome info. I have a frame needing powder coating as soon as I've stripped all the old components off it. DO you know if either place will sandblast the old paint off first? Not sure I've got the spare time at the moment to strip the paint myself.

  • Ah I see what i have done. this guy is the shot blasting dude, make sure the price includes the forks ;-)

Just called him on the phone - Seemed very helpful, I'll get the frame stripped and dropped off with him some time next week. He didn't have a list of available RAL colours but I guess I'll choose when I get there :)

post up some pics of the finish if you can ;-)

  • Due to be delivering my frame to Witney Metalwork Services for some sand blasting early tomorrow morning. I tried with Nitromors but the paint is still a bitch to remove so I gave up...

Will post pics when I get it sprayed!

Picked up the frame from Lewis the other day. Very friendly, very quick turnaround, great guy.

I also needed some holes in the headtube filling. Lewis originally offered to do it but then on closer inspection of the frame decided that with the tools he had, he wouldn't be able to make a good job of it (Honesty appreciated. I think he is used to slightly more "industrial" jobs). Anyway when I went to pick the frame up, he took me across the industrial estate to talk to another welder who had more delicate equipment and persuaded them to do it for me then and there. Lewis then took the frame back and evened up the sandblasting to give it an even finish beneath the powdercoat. All in all I took up most of an hour of his time, all while I know he was in a hurry to get to another job. £30 all in (welding and blasting the frame and forks). Thoroughly recommended.

Oh and he's based here. Unit 11 I think.
