• After a couple of years on 48:18 (70GI), I switched back to 48:19 (66.6GI) and I am really enjoying the spinning. Easier to accelerate in traffic and I'm able to spin better these days on the downhills. I think there is a bit of macho bravado about the big gears some people are pushing. IMO it's not slower when you go lower. Tried this gearing on an out of town ride in error (meant to switch back to 48:18) and it was totally fine. Managed decent average speed. Surely looking after your knees, manoeuvrability and developing leg speed are more important than high numbers.
