If you do this ride again you should consider going along the birmingham and wolverhampton canal and getting to Halesowen via the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherton_Tunnel_Branch_Canal, its 3km of disorientating fun.
Mudguards are useful as there are some waterlogged parts of the towpath and it can get quite chilly in there. I rode through it a few weeks ago and it was a unique cycling experience :D
