  • ^ do what you're doing, take a break, do some light running somewhere nice then come back to proper stuff when you feel fresh again.

  • Horatio - in a nutshell, everything is connected. A good example is overpronation (observed at the ankle) causing knee pain via the ITB.

Good core stability can help prevent a lot of common running niggles that are expressed away from the core.

  • no, I've got a target, another marathon in October with a really ambitious target time [for me]

Could be i don't have a proper program I suppose. I was going to join a club so i had some people to do intervals with but been putting that off until after i've been away.

I think i am just looking for validation to take a week off, which i think i've just given myself [with your help]!. some light running in the countryside next week, establish a program and join a club, get back on track!

  • It's probably your body telling you to give it a break, most ofthe big marathon runners run 2-3 marathons per year as doing the training and running take a lot out of you, give yourself a week off and you'll come back feeling stronger and faster, or at worst just fresher!

You won't loose much in the way of fitness over 7 days either, running on Coastal pats is great but some of the hills are completely in runnable in my experience!

  • I've not run properly for nearly a year now, when i ran the London 10K.
Decided to head out for a trot last night and thought about shortening my old 10K training route.
Ran the whole 10K loop in the end, after feeling ace, and ran a sub 40min. Really happy with my fitness.

    Can't fucking walk today.

  • What is the best way to nuke the stink out of kit?
I have some really funky shorts that are fresh when they come out of the wash but get just as stinky after 20 mins running.
Should I just scrap them and buy new ones? I'm pretty sure that boiling technical fabrics is a no no. Maybe a soak in biological washing powder?

  • Maybe it is just me that stinks?

  • wool? run in plus fours

  • What running shoes would one recommend for around the £50 mark?

  • Very difficult to reccomend running shoes as everybody has different feet and body. It would be best to go to a dedicated running shop and try some on and get some advice.

  • What running shoes would one recommend for around the £50 mark?

I'd go with what was said above but these

    or these

are pretty good shoes to start you off.

  • ^re. washing kit, add sodium bicarb and white vinegar as a pre-wash and use biological washing liquid.

  • anyone else doing the bupa 10k tomorrow?

I'm in blue section group b and I'll be in my lfgss cap so keep an eye out for me in the giant throng of runners.

  • did you beat a below par Paula?

  • did you beat a below par Paula?

No i slept through my alarm and woke up 90 minutes after the race had started. :(

oh well, another one in July...

  • Found out that I won my class in the latest half-marathon. Despite doing little training and carrying an injury.

Massive bonus being 35 now. All the 20 - 34 year olds kicked my arse.

  • that's awesome smallfurry. i consider myself a passable distance swimmer and i still only squeak into the top 10% in my age group nationally. winning your age group is HUGE no? congrats dude.

i had my best run evah last night. i think i finally get it. i was actually enjoying it and ran 50% further than i've been before without stopping at a pretty steady pace over a very pleasant 7.5k round south london. sure i'll be over the magic 10k within a week. i'm a runner! wooHOO!

    for the record things that have helped me up my game in the last couple of weeks are;

    • no music. i don't get on with music when running. i find it either affects my pace too much (I need to be setting the pace, not whatever tune happens to be on) irritates me if it's not the right thing or i get annoyed at the less than perfect sound quality as my headphones get bounced out by the sweat and motion. plus i find myself using track lengths to figre out how long i've been running which tends to make it feel longer than has been. maybe i'll come back to it when i'm feeling a bit more secure in my abilities, but for now i feel much happier with my own thoughts and the sound of my breath.

    • nothing in my hand and no GPS device. i'm happier carrying as little as possible. i find that not constantly waiting for the nike+ lady to say "four... kilometres... current pace... five minutes" or whatever, quite liberating. it stops me from concentrating on distance and my disappointing pace and lets me just enjoy what i'm doing.

    • changing up my route. just getting lost and taking random turns is more interesting and seems to make the miles fly. just doing the same loop round the river got boring as it's almost all straight and as you can see your destination for almost the whole lap so it seems longer.

seems to be working for me anyway.

  • I've just started running and have been really enjoying it. My last run was the day before yesterday but my quads are still hurting, do you know why this is?

At the moment I'm running for fitness more than anything but when you get in the 'zone' It's great.

  • signed up for the bupa 10k next year already. still gutted I missed it this time.

  • So basically It's hurting because I don't use these muscles very often? But I'm still ok to run?

  • Cheers for the advice on the shoes. I will go to my local shop and get fitted out for my running style as suggested

  • I've only been doing about 1.6-2 miles surely that's taking it easy enough?

  • Still running forefoot. Calves are getting stronger. First time I did it I was hurting for a few days. Last couple of runs I've been recovered the next day. Still only doing short runs though (2k today). I really want to take it easy to avoid any chance of injury.

My speed has picked up, although I'm not actually that bothered about speed. Broke my 1k, 1 mile, 2k, and cooper (none of which are great anyway, as I'm not running for these distances in my head - still trying to go slow and steady for distance). I've also been much more aware of my style and noticed today I'm not lifting my foot quickly enough on each stride. I'm sort of dragging/braking when each foot is on the ground by leaving it there for too long. I guess I need to be springing back up, and to do that, I think I need to pull with my knees quicker. I figure this will help speed (again, not too bothered) but also result in a softer step (am quite bothered).

Hopefully I'll be back at 5ks in a couple of weeks - this time without any injuries.

    Cheers.

Kudos on the sans music running. If it helps, I read a big peice by some shrink on the mental benefits of running, being somewhat lost by listening to music. I never run events with music on, seems rude to me. But I do train with it. The heavy metal seems to get the juices flowing quicker.

I'm very dependant on aggressive music in the winter, as I need to turn on my aggression. To enjoy the bad weather. But then in the winter I carry all sorts of gear anyway.

In the summer its nice to take a minimalist approach.
