Polishing titanium

  • Can titanium be polished to a mirror shine? I just bought some beautiful titanium one-piece flat handlebars/stem. They're slightly scuffed. Would love to smooth out the welding and polish down the titanium making it shiny.

Would appreciate any advice you can offer,

    Thanks!

  • taking down the welds you'll need a flapwheel or similar. Though if it was me I wouldn't be keen taking anything off welds on frame tubing, they are generally pretty minimal on high end stuff anyway.

  • A lot of the weld strength is in the convex part of the weld. Grinding any weld back to flush is not a good idea.

  • spit and elbow grease - takes aaages

  • Thanks for the advice re not smoothing the welds.

So tilover, you're telling me you wear down scuffs in your ti with nothing but a cloth and your super strength?

  • Try a product from AUTOSOL called: Marine Shine

  • Yup. That or a dremel with a buffing wheel!

  • If you want smooth welds then buy a fillet brazed steel frame. The lumpy welds are a sign of TIG welding and as said above, are what holds the tubes together :-)

If it's scuffs and the odd scratch then fine emery cloth or wet and dry sandpaper will do the trick. Finish it with a scotchbrite pad. Try and rub in the same direction as the original finish (grain) and it can come up as new.
