its not scary it's delicious. Not exactly, w/o toeclips i'll have the balls of my feet on the pedals as opposed to fully in the straps, also the clips are solid bits of metal and attached to and pedals so not flexable if they get caught, wheras my my feet are free moving so can just be pushed out the way if they hit the wheel. Don't know if I explained that right but basically my feet will be further back w/o straps
