Tapered head tubes

What is the deal with these? and more specifically if a buy a tapered fork can i use it with a standard 1'18 headtube frame?

They're stiffer where they need to be stiffer, at the crown race where the fork meets the headtube at the bottom.

They're usually 1.5" tapering to 1 1/8" so no, you can't use a tapered steerer fork in a standard 1 1/8 frame.

However you can get adapters and special headsets that allow you to use 1 1/8" forks in a frame with a 1.5" or tapered headtube.
