  • I'm doing a bit for the Guardian on bicycle mugging. I seem to remember some people on here have been yanked off a bike and had it stolen, and that others have had near misses.

Would anyone be up for telling their story?

Also, any tips on how to avoid becoming a victim?

  • Avoid East London?

  • Is this in response to that ETA survey? Is there anything statistically significant in the findings, or is it a bit of marketing/scaremongering for the insurance firm?

(although I've read some of the really nasty accounts on here over the years; and ETA looks like a good thing on the whole)

  • Also, any tips on how to avoid becoming a victim?

38 Snub-nose in your bottle cage usually puts would-be muggers off.

  • I always feel safer from 'street crime' when I'm on a bike as it means I avoid waiting a bus stops, walking home from them late at night etc

I thought that untill I took a flying punch to the side of the head.

It's something I've been thinking about for a while, having read reports on here.

Same with me, but it seems to be becoming a problem in some areas. It's a terrifying thought, being left shaken-up in the dark somewhere, in your cleats having to hobble home and report it.

    No results for that...

  • Thanks for the response Sparky. The police open crime data stats may help to put into proportion (or, indeed, show how worrying a trend this may be)

  • .

  • don't you mean de beauvoir?

  • OK, I was sure I'd read a lot about this over the past year or so, but seeing it all laid out like that is quite scary.

I know we're a forum of 10,000+, but even keeping that scale in mind this is a lot of attacks.

    Guilty as charged.

  • You young scamp, Lucy.

  • Same with me, but it seems to be becoming a problem in some areas.

Which is the big question; is it becoming more of a problem or not? Is it increasing or is it being reported more? And, relative to walking home, or getting the tube or bus, or driving, how safe is cycling?
You will need to be very careful not to be seen to be scaremongering or basing your fears on incomplete or unreliable statistics or anecdote. There are enough people scared to cycle already without giving them a further, and possibly unjustified, reason not to.

  • don't you mean de beauvoir?

    Yes my bad clara
    de beauvoir
just near the bike polo courts

  • I get mugged every time I go into Condor.

    thankyouwe'rehereallweektrythefish.

  • Since I've been wearing my LFGSS Summer Jersey, I have not been mugged.

  • ^^ That's not people think when they see you wearing it ;-)

  • I was on the bus travelling north on the Kingsland road a few months back. Saw a chap being smashed about by two not so nice chaps, trying to grab his bike. Fists flying all over the place. Anyhow, jumped off at the next stop (few hundred meters up road) and luckily enough ran into several undercover police officers. Pretty obviously undercover- leaning on sports tinted cars, with radio's on hips. Informed them and they wizzed off back down the road.
Lets hope they made it in time....Never heard anything

  • ^ good work. Why didn't you just dial 999 though?... (presumes that everybody has a mobile phone on them all the time)

actually it's annoying when people talk on phone when on a bus :)

  • Ms TrN had been doing karate lessons and wanted to try out those newly gained skillz
    probably
